Special thanks to MissLacybee for giving me my first review!
Twenty-six year old Jacoline Holcombe believes herself quite firmly on the shelf. Faced with an unfulfilling silent life, she abandons all propriety, dresses in men's clothing, and goes fencing with her brother. There, due to terrible luck and even worse planning, "Jack" is introduced to - and tries to curtsy to - the reserved and unapproachable Duke of Aspen.
Aspen is scarred over most of his face and body. He is accustomed to fending off the advances of fortune hunters and their mothers and has never known a woman to want anything more from him. Self-conscious and cynical, he dislikes social occasions and avoids the company of women. Faced with an awkward and oddly effeminate young man, however, he goes out of his way to be kind.
Believing her a gentleman, Aspen shows Jacoline a man's life in Regency-era London and trusts her with his secrets. But as much as Jacoline comes to respect and love the Duke of Aspen, she is living a lie and the truth would ruin her. She does not know that her actions also risk exposing her brother's secret: an illegal male lover and a family hidden from the world. After Aspen discovers Jacoline's lies and the house of cards begins to fall, Jacoline must beg the man she secretly loves to save her brother...
What if you were captured, forced into a way of living that was horrid, told you're someone you're not, and then have to deny everything you know and love because of one thing...

“Do you have confidence in this brew, Miss Serbus?”
“Yes, I believe so, sir.”
“Because, if you manage to kill me from me drinking your work, then you’ll spend life in Azkaban. Is it true that they still employ capital punishment in America?”
“Yes, professor, although now they’ve outlawed it for mentally insane persons, or those under the age of sixteen. It’s about time they did something about those laws. They seem terribly archaic.”
“Capital punishment on the whole is an archaic practice, Miss Serbus.”
“No, I don’t think so, sir. If the person killed a mass number of people at one time, or picked off several innocent individuals over the years, or attempted to kill a child, justice can only be served if they themselves pay the price they dealt to their victims. What if it was someone you loved, professor? Wouldn’t you, then, want the ultimate punishment for the killer?”
“It’s not something I need to think about, Miss Serbus, for I love no one.”
“Well, I am sorry for that, sir.”
“I don’t have the Trace on me anymore,” he said flatly, crossing his arms. “Trace breaks at seventeen. I turned seventeen yesterday.”
“I’m well aware of that, Potter,” Snape said with a sneer. “However, I should warn you that Death Eaters will swarm this place shortly—”
“What?” Harry asked. “You mean, besides you?”
Snape’s lip curled at that; yes, he knew he deserved all that and more, but actually hearing it from someone as pure and perfect as Harry... “Yes, besides me, Potter,” he said, his tone soft. “I know I’m likely the last person you want to see right now...”
“You’re right,” Harry said, and moved to leave.
