Ginny climbed the cool, dark marble staircase to the boys dormitory and knocked gently on the door. There was no answer. Ginny opened the door and saw Harry sitting on the windowsill, broomstick in hand, halfway through climbing out the open window

They stepped around the corner to see Borgin and Burkes and Harry’s heart sank. Clustered around the shop was a small horde of disreputable-looking witches and wizards buzzing with shocked whispers.

“Shh!” Luna hissed. “Stop shouting! It’s the witching hour!”
“You are a witch!” Hermione snapped. “What have you got to be scared of, Muggles?”
“They.”

Ginny raised her foot to step into the ring but Luna seized her wrist and yanked her back with a gasp of alarm.
‘Are you crazy?’ she hissed, her protuberant eyes almost popping out of her head. ‘You can’t go in there! You’ll die!’

Harry heard the footsteps quicken their pace, approach, as if they were trying to hear what was being said, drawing unpleasantly near behind his back. Then a twig snapped with a loud crack.
‘Who’s there?’ Harry spun round, his wand whipped out of his pocket in a flash.

‘My - my scar...’ Harry sat up, spitting out a mouthful of the stale-tasting water. The pain was gone as quickly as it had come.

‘He’s not - near us, is he?’ Ron asked anxiously, looking around apprehensively as though he expected to see the sudden glint of red, snake-like eyes from the shadows.

Harry was feet from Ron now, and his smile faltered. Something was very wrong.
