“ James and I went on a walk. We made out in the forest.” That was good actually, be brutally honest up front. Well, not completely honest, but close enough to hopefully avoid further questioning.
“ Oh my god, really? I can’t believe you would make out with James Potter. I just hope Scorpius doesn’t find out. I mean I don’t think he’d tell your dad or anything, but still.”
“ That was James Potter?”

Selena puts her arm around my shoulders and we walk together up to the castle. All the way she’s reassuring me I’ve done the right thing. I nod, because I know it’s true, though I can‘t shake the feeling I‘ve made a mistake. Again. A baby may not deserve to be slaughtered…but it sure doesn’t deserve me as a mum.

Even if I’ve been here hundreds of times it’s still a very welcome relief. The quiet, white house sitting off by itself on the dusty countryside. Huge red barn out back, inside the fence behind it you can see the horses grazing. I roll down my window and suck in a big breath. Lovely country air. It almost makes me stop hating life for the moment. Almost.

There is no way for me to explain to them that this is very hard to just say, and that there isn’t a chance in hell that telling them will be quick and painless. My mouth has stopped working correctly. I try to open and speak, but all that comes out is ‘Ggg…’ Mum has that look on her face that I’ve seen too many times. The one that questions my sanity at the same time as making me feel extremely guilty. How does she do that?

Ella has a rather embarressing encounter with Scorpius and his stupid friends. James is a git and Selena is a good friend...

Things aren’t exactly looking up, but they’re certainly less crappy then they were just a few days ago.

Well on the telling our families front, that is. On the Selena keeping secrets and the whole school knowing I’m pregnant front…everything is quickly going down the loo.

I climb into the Gryffindor common room feeling like someone has drilled a big hole down my spine and poured jelly down it, and also like all the bones floated out of my arms and legs and have been replaced with noodles.

I should know better than to get hopeful by now

Ella Malfoy is going to stop being a selfish complainer and start acting. Now is the time, and I can’t wait any more. I have to become an adult.

Rose starts for the dorms, and Selena rushes after her. I have to shout to remind her to come back and heave me out of the couch, but she runs back and we chase Rose. Rose seems to have spotted Roxanne and is uttering a very shrill battle cry and flying at her cousin.

“ JAMES!”

“ SCORPIUS!”

“ FRED!”

Muggles are capable of quite a bit if they really put their minds to it. I think you could find anything in this place.

I suck in a huge breath and push down so hard I’m seeing spots, screaming all the while. When I stop this time Healer Crispin looks up and smiles. “ One more should do it, Ella. I can see the head.”

When everything is right in the world it just can't be the end of the story.
