Toward the end of the hall, where the terminal patients resided, an older girl sat on her bed reading a battered copy of Peter Pan. She flipped carefully through the thin pages, her bottom lip protruding slightly as she concentrated. Her skin seemed as white as the pages of the book, and just as thin. Her sunken eyes were shining as she was transported to a world where children never die, especially not the way she was. Because she was. Dying.

2 Anything Can Happen

Her whole perception of the impossible had changed. She, in face, had changed as well, and quite remarkably so. The dark circles and sunken cheeks had disappeared, replaced with bright eyes and a rosy smile. Though still thin and waifish, she looked much less breakable, and there was a spring in her step that had been missing for a long time. The change in her could be described as nothing short of magical.
