Prologue: The Past and The Present “Tell me what you know,” a furious hiss demanded. Scorpius closed his eyes, willing it all to disappear. He couldn’t speak in fear of betraying everything. The voice came again. “You lousy, worthless-- We’ve held connections all over the world for centuries. We will find her if you don’t tell us what we need to know. We will find her, and we will not be merciful.” |

On Accident (The Past) “You’re such a good friend,” Rose said, opening her eyes to see Scorpius’ face dangerously close to her own. |

Running (The Present) Salty spray from the ocean slapped against his face as he ran to the shelter of the trees. It felt refreshing against his sweaty face. Taking one last look over his shoulder, Scorpius Malfoy grimaced as he remembered the terrors of that hill and what was truly beneath it. |

Invitation (The Past) It wasn’t his fault that she was so beautiful. He couldn’t help it if her flowery scent drove him crazy, filled his mouth with a burning need to taste her skin to see if it tasted as sweet as it smelled. There was nothing he could do about her ocean eyes and how they had bewitched him like no magic could. What stung the most was that his feelings had never seemed to fade over time, just strengthen and multiply. He was in dangerous territory. |

Powerful (The Present) They landed hard upon the ground, desert sand scattering beneath their feet. Rose staggered slightly, trying to regain her balance. Scorpius managed to keep his footing, looking around guardedly. Dropping his bag, Scorpius reached out to steady Rose, lightly touching her waist. She looked up at him, still in disbelief, before she looked around to see where Scorpius had taken them. |

Confession (The Past) Rain was harshly beating against the roof of the Leaky Cauldron, and Hugo had already set out pots and pans in various spots of the pub. These were used to catch the runaway rain which always managed to squeeze through the slightest cracks in the roof. He stood dumbly, trying to console a disheartened Scorpius Malfoy for reasons he still didn’t know. |

Speechless (The Past) Scorpius couldn’t gather enough synonyms to describe Rose’s perfection. His heart rate increased dramatically as Rose came into view. The shimmering dark turquoise blue of her dress flowed freely behind her, a slit in the skirt exposing just enough of her leg to have his palms sweat. The intricate, low-cut bodice hugged her curves, and it was truly going to kill him. |

Ice (The Past) Before Scorpius got the chance to explain his feelings for her there was an interruption to the music. Scorpius’ hands stayed firmly in place, his eyes locked on Rose’s. There was a clanking of crystal, and everybody had stopped dancing to turn their attention to the stage. A man’s eerily familiar voice echoed off of the walls, his wand pointed at his throat, magnifying his voice. Scorpius reluctantly broke his stare with Rose and looked in horror at the stage. |

Fire (The Past) Ian’s grip on her hand was beginning to hurt, and as Rose watched Scorpius disappear up the stairs and to the lobby, she felt an inexplicable urge to escape the roaring applause and the hundreds of eyes which were on her face and her face alone. When the flash of a camera dazzled Rose’s vision with its blinding light, she wafted her hand in front of her blushing face. |

Aftermath (The Past) It was like one-thousand emotions were spiraling around his gut, and he couldn’t quite place the one word to apply to the situation he was in. There was Rose, the most beautiful, magnificent person Scorpius could ever imagine twisted in the sheets on the bed beside him. Her breath had a sweet, sticky aroma to it, and every time she had breathed his name in a heated whisper rampant with desire, his head would spin. But, the fire had left her eyes, and something metallic had entered her voice when she answered his question: "I don't know..." |

Healers (The Past) Ian flipped the page of his Daily Prophet, muttering something about an article of his distaste. Rose sat beside him, her cup of tea rippling between her hands, hardly listening. Grey light illuminated her living room, and even though it was noon on a Monday, Rose was still dressed in her pajamas, her hair in a messy ponytail, her lips chapped and her eyes puffy. It had been three days since the Founder’s Day Ball, and it had been her second day calling in sick for work. |

Interlude, Part I (The Present) Quinn Thomsen wasn’t an enthusiast of unpleasant situations. He couldn’t stomach gruesome movies, day-old Chinese food or plotting the demise of his friends. And yet here he was, in the center of everything unpleasant, waiting outside of the Leader’s door, twiddling his thumbs in front of the large security guard who had crossed arms and a scowl on his face which could have sent Werewolves whimpering in the opposite direction. |

Revived (The Present) “I was told that I would be a part of something important, worthy of my time and dedication,” he began. “They trapped me, smothered me. They took everything away from me. The Brethren was my savior and my downfall.” |

Lovesick (The Past) “Can’t we call in sick?” Scorpius groaned, falling backwards onto the pillows, pulling Rose down with him. |

Hunted (The Present) Something massive and black flew past them, the shadows around them shifting in an upward spiral as the boulder they stood upon inched towards the flatness of the desert. Scorpius noticed them, and he pulled Rose against his chest, gripping the lantern which was in her shaking hand. Silence enveloped them. A rush of moving air swept past them which sent chills down Rose’s back bone. Concentrating on the flat rock ahead of them, Scorpius’ control of the boulder faltered slightly as something touched it, tipped it. |
