1 An Unceremonious Arrival

“My name’s Teddy—Teddy Lupin,” said Teddy.

“Victoire Weasley,” said the silver-haired girl.

“Samantha Riddle—you can call me Sammy,” Sammy said. “Pleasure."

“Hmm… very interesting…” whispered a voice in her ear. Sammy stiffened even more, if that was possible. “Lots of bravery… quite clever, I see…” it continued. “If you’re anything like your parents—”

“Don’t judge me by my parents!” Sammy hissed, unable to control herself. “I’m not like them!”

3 Defense Against the Dark Arts

Standing at the head of the class was a petite woman with light blonde hair swinging down to the center of her back. She was dressed in all black.  She looked like a sheathed dagger, dangerous at a moment’s notice.

The woman sprawled her hands on the front desk, crowding a red-haired Ravenclaw, and leaned forward. “I am Professor Seward,” she stated. Her voice was not loud, but it rang clearly in the deathly quiet classroom.

"And you…” He turned to Sammy, and then his giant frame stiffened slightly. “Why, you look jus’ like…”

Sammy drew in her breath.

Hagrid chose his words slowly. “…jus’ like a boy I knew when I was yer age. Got me in big trouble, right. What’s yer name?” A suspicious glint slid into his dark eyes.

5 Unexpected Confidantes

She passed no one as she made her way up to the common room, one step at a time.  She pushed up with her legs, one by one.  Her rhythmic footsteps beat out a tune of suspected-suspected-suspected

Sammy reached the portrait of the Fat Lady.  Looking, not at the ruined face, but at the frayed and ripped corner of the painting, she mumbled, “Scurvy-grass.”

It was not the way she looked, not the way she acted--the strange, small, silent girl with dark hair and light footsteps. None of these things made him think of his father, who was dead-gone-never-coming-back, who had left Garrett all alone, who was murdered by Death Eaters..

It was what he suspected, what he knew about the Sammy Riddle that reminded him of his fathers' death.

Spawn of a murderer. She doesn't even deserve to live.

7 Stolen Secret

"We'll show those Slytherins right up, everyone I know's been riding broomsticks since they were three!" boasted a wiry boy with mousy brown hair.

Sammy had rubbed her arms uncomfortably; she had never ridden a broom, nor did she have any desire at all to get on one.
