The contrast between the two worlds was breath-taking. Stepping, or in this case being carried, from the grey and dismal muggle world to here was most probably Lily’s favourite part of her journey to Hogwarts. 

 Dearest Lily,
I spent the entire summer trying to work out what to say to you. You see, you’ve always had that effect on me. 

‘Maybe James actually had meant everything he had said. No that can’t be true, or could it?’  
Before she knew what she was doing, she ran out of her room, moving across the hall and throwing open the door in front of her. 

 James felt Lily move closer to him, resting her head on his shoulder. He smiled, glancing down at her. She was so beautiful, he was so proud of her for how well she was coping. He knew she was struggling and he wanted to be there to support her. He put his arm around her shoulder resting his head on hers. It felt right.

Lily awoke the next morning still curled up next to James. It was strange, it felt so natural and she felt so safe. She looked at the clock and saw that it was 9:15. They needed to leave for the funeral at 11:00. James was still asleep beside her, she reached her hand up to his forehead and stroked back his hair. 

 Lily had spent the last few hours lying in bed staring at the ceiling. ‘What’s happening?’ she thought. ‘I’ve gone from hating him, to being friends, to well I don’t even know what we were these past few days, to now. We couldn’t even sit in a room together without it being awkward.’

“When’s the next full moon James?” she whispered, hoping to hide the worry in her voice
“It’s tomorrow. I’m sorry Lily, I wish I could have told you sooner.” He got no reply. “Hey,” he said placing a finger under her chin and lifting her head up so their eyes met. “I know this is a shock, but I have to do this for Remus. I’ll be ok, I’ve done it plenty of times.” He offered a smile and was glad to see Lily return one.

Everything was perfect. But perfection never lasts.
As they turned a corner, a tall, dark figure moved out of the shadows and into the light. Snape.
