The mystery woman turns from watching the boy getting chased by his mother and looks at Fred. “I suppose,” She says with a hint of a sigh, “But I just spent my chocolate money.”

Fred wonders briefly, what the neighbours think. He had once heard an old woman scolding her granddaughter for being nosy. “What goes on behind closed doors is their business and their business only.” Fred never used to understand what she meant – surely everyone should help everyone else- somehow, now he does.
