Prologue | Things that go bump in the night The noises I am hearing are probably quite normal. But I keep swallowing nervously and one line from a song I have always thought was creepy repeats itself over and over again in my head. ‘If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise.’ It’s not creepy per say, because the title of the song is ‘Teddy Bear Picnic’ and (as you could have guessed) it’s about a bunch of teddy bears picnicking in the woods. But still. |

Ch-ch-changes “I remember this. You have just broken Harry’s nose,” I whisper to him and he rolls his eyes. “If you had to get us transported into the past, why not a fun time? But our sixth year at Hogwarts? Been here, done this. Although I did have a great time breaking Potter’s nose,” Malfoy whines. |

Well, that was weird Malfoy practically bounces backwards out of the alcove. |

Undo what’s been done “You’re repairing it?” I ask, rather pointlessly. |

Cars on a cable “I really can’t accept it,” Harry says, gentlemanly. It doesn’t help at all that he’s so good mannered. Ron would have taken it in a heartbeat. |

Daydream Malfoy looks concerned as I lean against a tree for support while I try to regulate my breathing. Suddenly I feel Malfoy taking my arm and draping it over his shoulder. With him practically carrying me we manage to get out of the Forbidden Forest. Grateful I feel my breathing slow down and the cold air cools my skin. |

My helping hand Now that Malfoy and me are forced to work together we’ve developed a nice routine of insulting each other while maintaining a pleasant conversation. Our secret is that we never cross the line. I’m not a mudblood and he’s not a conceited git. Well, he is, but I never actually call him that. Today we had another one of those civilized talks and somehow I got the feeling that Malfoy was flirting with me, which is not only highly unlikely, but also ridiculous on so many levels. |

The way we were “Son of a…” I mumble. When I wake up I feel under my pillow and a little note has replaced the piece of cabinet I have taken from Malfoy. Perplexed I unfold it. You look pretty cute when you’re asleep, it says. The thought of Malfoy being in my dorm and being close enough to me to take something from under my pillow freaks me out and gives me another feeling deep in the pit of my stomach, which I’m not going to get into. Suffice to say that this feeling is rather enjoyable. |

Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt “So, Ron’s going to be okay?” |

Never been blue like this Ignoring everyone who’s staring at me with pity in their eyes and the people crying in the hallways I head straight for the Gryffindor common room. Harry and Ginny are sitting by the fireplace. Harry is staring into the fire with a vacant expression on his face, while Ginny is alternating between looking at him and staring at her lap. She’s biting her lip, trying to restrain emotion. Anger and sadness are present in her folded arms. |

Coming clean “Correction. I was searching for the Horcrux, you have found. Give it to me,” I demand and in response Malfoy only laughs. But as amused as he started out now he’s faltering and even with his face in the dark I can see a curious expression cross his face. Realisation dawns on him and he grimaces. |

A disturbing déjà vu The contours of his face are blurred and soft in the moonlight and he almost seems dear to me. I bite my lip, repressing these out-of-the-blue emotions. He opens my hand and places the ring on my palm. His touch is gentle and I feel every wrinkle of his fingertips. For as long as the touch lasts the world is made of strawberry ice cream and pink cotton candy and I’m floating in an ocean of the softest feathers. |

Will we ever get beyond bickering? “So… You love me?” I say and this question sounds so surreal, ridiculous and awkward, mostly because I never thought me asking him this would some day lie within the realms of possibility. He touches my wrist with his fingertips and puts his hand back in his lap. |

Unstoppable forces I love him so much it makes me say over the top corny things. I want to spend the rest of my life with him. I want to fall asleep next to him and wake up in his arms. |

Going nowhere really fast “Get her! Someone get her! I want my mother!” Draco screams frantically. Everybody freezes and stares at him. He turns away from the window and grabs my hand. |

Rock bottom “I don’t want to do this, but don’t you realise I have to? What if I tell him his mother is still alive and he decides not to help us? Without his help we’re not going to find the Horcruxes, ergo we’re not going to defeat Voldemort. I can’t risk that. Can you?” |

What a difference a day makes “Mrs. Malfoy. May I call you by your first name? Narcissa, I don’t know whether you can hear me or not, probably not, but still I feel it’s my duty to assure you. If anyone is capable of saving you it’s your son and he will do anything that lies in his power to help you. I for one hope he succeeds.” |

Lover alone without love For the time being, however, all is not well. He’s so tired and his mind is starting to play tricks on him. One good night’s rest and I will be fine, he tells himself, for the moment forgetting his nightmare and the worsening insomnia. Or he knows and is simply ignoring it. He’s such an optimist. He’s fooling himself. Take a pick. Ha ha ha. Stop it! |

Beam me up, Molly “Awesome!” Draco sighs and he wearily shakes his head, ”This is simply FAN-TAS-TIC! Exactly what I need right now. Well, at least now I know I’m insane, because Harry the Hero would surely not be appearing to Draco if Draco was in his right mind.” Mildly amused he taps his head. |
