Ch. # Chapter Title Word Count Reviews
1 Prologue - The Reason

Soon, very soon, I would leave this place and all its boundaries, and I would leave and do something great. However, I didn’t know at what cost it would come, and stared at the moon through the window of my room as I drifted off to sleep.

3 The First Day

4 Sunshine

When I looked around again, Rosemary was dancing in circles, dancing to the sound the animals made around us, and I couldn’t help it, I just had to dance with her, moving my body to the rhythm of the sounds and closing my eyes so that all I could do was feel the vibrations enter my ears.

A kind of nonsense chapter.

5 A Change of Position

Then Cortez stopped suddenly, cursing under his breath while I held mine. I looked ahead of us and saw a door, one marked with a single rose. A few more glances later, I realized that this part of the house was not familiar to me; I usually only occupied the center of it, where the Young Master stayed during his days at home, and this one was completely different.

6 Meeting Oliver Wood

“You cursed me,” he said, and I could gather that his mind was skeptical of me: of course he couldn’t trust me; I hadn’t trusted him in the years we had known one another, and one day we walk back into one another’s lives without an inkling of each other since seventh year to start with.

7 Illness at Westerbrook

“Rosemary?” I asked suddenly. When she gave a noise that said to the affirmative that she was paying close attention, I went on. “What do you think happens, when we die?” I really hadn’t meant to mention it, for I just knew that Rosemary wouldn’t take well with the question, taking into account her present condition. But, like all the other times, Rosemary never ceased to amaze me.

8 Fearsome Flames

Upon my way down to the kitchen, I couldn’t help but smell something strange in the air. The very scent of it caught me of guard, and if it hadn’t, I knew that I would have never noticed the aroma entering my nostril. Following the scent, I realized shortly that I was en route to Wood’s very bedroom, and nearly fainted when I paused outside his door, the very door I had fawned at on my first day at Westerbrook. However, by the way the smoke was pouring through the cracks of the door.

9 A Gay Party

There was a young woman, perhaps a year or two younger than I, who was dancing most majestically with Wood; she was bestowed with a pale face and light eyes. Her cheeks were reddened only by the use of make-up (I may add that mine were naturally so), and her blonde hair was swept in a spectacular up-do that many paused to admire. However, as she peered about the room, I could not help but feel a negative air about her; she seemed spoiled and malevolent in nature, and when her eyes rested on me she betrayed a hint of annoyance.

10 Learning the Truth

Samantha led me away from the parlor to a lower-floor room, and as she did so, I noticed a warning glance escape Sally-Anne’s eye, of which Samantha was completely oblivious. When we arrived at my aunt’s room, I noticed it was far too small for a master bedroom of a house that size, and realized that master bedroom must have been on the upper floor of the house; when my aunt took ill, she must have been moved to the lower floor so that if she wanted to get up, she wouldn’t have ascend or descend the staircase.

11 Divulging the Truth

“No, I am sure I would not.”

My back was to the entrance, but still I knew who it was, and as I watched Samantha’s eyes reach above me, I knew he was standing just behind me, and, for some strange reason, my cheeks grew hot. My hands were cool so I rubbed them, but the heat would not go away, and so I instead decided to ignore it. Samantha grinned, looking mischievously from Wood to me, and then stood, setting her embroidery in her chair. I too, left my seat, but she shook her head at me, that same playful expression on her face.

12 Love at Westerbrook?

“Allison,” Wood said in a soft voice, stopping my very breath, “I feel as if there is a chain, linking us together, and if you were to go anywhere in the world, I know that chain would break, and even if you were to come to back, I know that it would never have a chance of mending itself again.” Then, without giving me a chance to catch my breath, Wood pulled me close to him, and kissed me, full on the mouth, for all the world to see.

13 Engagement

Oliver ceased walking suddenly, and I hadn’t realized it until I was well ahead of him. Turning around, I gave him a glance which I knew he would read as, “What is bothering you?” However, he pointedly did not look my way, and my cheeks bloomed with embarrassment and worry. Why was Oliver acting so? It was as if we were having an argument, a silent one at that, and I had not a clue as to what was the topic of the matter, or if there even was one. Puzzled, I strolled slowly back to him.

14 A Flaw in Marriage

However, when I looked to Oliver, I realized that I didn’t care, that today was going to be the happiest day of my life, the best day of my life. And then the priest said, “If there is anyone who feels that this marriage should not take place, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.” Of course, I didn’t expect anyone to speak up, with even the small thought of Mrs. Brown, but that didn’t account for the amount of surprise I felt when I heard the strong, masculine voice of another man speak, a voice I had never heard in my life, but one that I would remember forever.

15 Exodus

The tears came out faster now. I didn’t bother to wipe them away, and instead slowly slid of the dress. The dress, a symbol of good things to come and happiness for all eternity, and now it was gone, blackened with the day’s events. I left it where it lay, near the armoire, and slid on some regular clothes. Through that entire day, only one thought seemed the strongest and the most astute. I had to leave. As much as it pained me to do so, I had to leave the manor. I couldn’t remain there with Oliver, and his wife.

16 Introductions

“Allie,” I said, reverting to the nickname Samantha had chosen for me, sickening as it was. “Allie Price.”

Lila took the name without a second thought, and poured some more hot chocolate for me, of which she had a great supply. “Lee, the one who found you out in the road a few days ago, is gone for now. He had to report back to London, but he’ll be around again, ere long. You’ve been asleep for quite some time, Miss, nearly three days! I’ll have to expect that you don’t want to put yourself out for much longer; otherwise, you’ll be nothing more than a potato!”

17 A Question Raised

Everyone now had their eyes set on Oliver, wondering what he might say. In order to increase suspense, he took an abnormally long time chewing and swallowing, and then he took a few sips of butterbeer before Lila couldn’t stand it any longer and burst out laughing. All the while, however, I had felt his eyes rest on me, not on his sisters.

18 An Illness and an Inquiry

Long had I been very unwell in the subject of Healing, having had to resort to it when I felt I had no other alternative, and often ending up in worse condition than I had at the beginning of the injury. Inside the interesting book, I found many different ways to cast the spells included in the information. Easier options to the ones I had been facing, which required all of your attention and thought processes, and truthfully enough, when I had an injury, physical or otherwise, my mind traveled to other things.

19 To Forgive and Not Quite Forget

I handed him the teacup, and he grabbed my hand, letting the cup fall to the ground and liquid splash all over the floor. “No,” he said, tracing the lines on the palms of my hands, feeling the indention my nails made when they met the skin. Suddenly, he turned away from me; I blanched, wondering how much more pain I had caused him, simply for being there.

20 Epilogue – A Happily Ever After Come True

I walked silently through the house, listening to the quiet breathing around me. The halls were darkened, but even with the absence of light, I was still able to make my way around. It reminded me of Westerbrook, with all its twists and turns.
