The sorting hat splits up Lily and Severus, and Lily meets James.

“Oh, come on, mate. You’ve got to get used to it eventually,” drawled Sirius, keeping his eyes closed as h. “It’s not exactly changing anytime soon. Every time you try to embarrass the grease wad, Lily takes his side and makes a fool of you. Just give up already.”
“I’m not giving up! What does she see in that coward? He can’t even stand up for himself. If he could, I probably wouldn’t be cursed as much.”

She jumped a bit when she heard a stair squeak quietly. She looked up to see three lanky figures creeping down the steps. One figure held what looked like an intricately designed fabric, and another held an old sheet of paper.
“I thought you’d never show up,” she murmured, just loud enough for them to hear.
“Hate to break it to you, sweetheart, but we’re early. It’s only eleven fifty-five.”
