Ch. # Chapter Title Word Count Reviews
1 London

It was a tall, old man. His greyish hair and beard were so long he had tucked them into his belt, she realized with a short widening of her eyes. He also wore the most peculiar clothing – a long, turquoise cloak and heeled, black shoes. He was smiling brightly at her.

2 September 1st

Carolyn Cassidy had never been this frightened before.
Not once in all the sixteen years of her life had her heart beat this fast, had her palms been this sweaty, had her small body trembled this much. Never before had her wish for the earth to open up and swallow her been this strong.

3 Sirius Black

Sirius Black had sprung to his feet lightly only a few feet from her, and was watching the mess of shattered plates and food strewn over the remains of the table, a proud look on his handsome face. Beside him, his messy-haired friend was laughing, giving him a high-five.
Carolyn was still wrestling with the horror inside of her.

4 Infatuation

She shook his offered hand warily, just because she thought it would be too impolite not to, but took a step back quickly.
“Allan Smith,” he said smoothly. “You are Carolyn, right? The muggle?”

5 The lab

Carolyn wondered whether she should call for Madam Pomfrey, but then an idea struck. An idea so crazy and insensible that she simply had to act on it.
She hurried back into the office. No one was there. She crossed the room swiftly and entered the lab once more.
She felt at home instantly.

6 The dance

It was the 22nd of December, and Carolyn Cassidy was about to go to the first dance of her life.

7 Allan Smith

Fear. Sickening fear flooded her, and her experience with the Slytherins came back, making her tense. But still her anger at everything, particularly at herself, at herself because she kept doing things wrong, because she wasn’t good enough for Sirius, was stronger, making her raise her eyes to his, blazing with fury.
“Don’t you threat me,” she hissed.

8 Hurt and Humiliation

“May I remind you that this is a highly infectious patient? He suffers severely from an unknown disease. Very soon, his insides will start wrinkling up and collapsing. The result is immediate, and extremely painful death. I could describe the exact proceedings to you, but I think you might not be able to stand hearing it. It is highly troubling. Poor Sirius ...”

9 Potions class

“You might want to weigh them up carefully,” she mumbled, clearing her throat. “They have to be the correct amount exactly, otherwise the whole potion will be ruined.”
For a moment, he was still. Then he turned to her with an expression that made her recoil slightly.
“And what -” he said through clenched teeth, “would you know about it?”

10 The fast wound healer

“Hello, muggle,” one of them sneered dangerously.
It weren’t even the same Slytherins that had stopped her that day so many months ago. But still the way he said ‘muggle’ left no doubt of the fact that they weren’t intending to be friendly.
And indeed, gazing at her threateningly, they raised their wands.
“N-” Carolyn began, but she didn’t get any further.

2,126 16
11 Lily

They had reached the Great Hall. Lily stopped and her brilliant green eyes pierced Carolyn’s. “Look,” said Lily, “I don’t know you. It’s your life. But I’d hate to see a brilliant potion-maker like you never get credit for her work just because some idiotic seventeen-year-old was unfairly singled out by nature.”

12 Crossing the line

“You,” she snarled at Sirius, “how dare you, you foul, big-headed, disgusting piece of scum! How dare you!"

13 Coming out

Slughorn made to open the door, then turned around again in the doorway, winking at Lily. “And bring Miss Cassidy, too, will you?”

2,833 22
14 To the top

Lily sighed. “Now, Carolyn, remember that I’m your friend and please don’t be insulted. But the way you dress is ridiculous, and your clothes plain ugly. Fortunately, however, I am here to help.”

2,237 22
15 Emergency at full moon

Checking her watch, she groaned. It was only six in the morning. She was about to lie back down when there was a knock on her door and a hushed whisper through the key hole.
“Carolyn! Please, it’s me, James, open up!”

3,417 26
16 Rejection

He seemed to be about to say something, but she finally managed to turn around again and hurried to leave.
“Wait – Carolyn!”

3,475 26
17 St Mungo's offer

“Okay,” Carolyn said, “the thing is, I just got a letter from St Mungo’s.”
“You are sick?” Lily said, aghast.
“No, of course not. They’ve invited me for a – a job interview.”

2,069 25
18 Job interview

She left the waiting room and found herself back in the entrance area. And suddenly she stopped rigid.
There, leaning against a table near the wall, black hair falling casually into his forehead like always, his face appearing bored, stood Sirius.

2,862 22
19 Attack

She suddenly felt like she was floating, and her vision blurred oddly, focusing only on Allan. And seeing him, she felt a new, unexpected sensation wash over her; she couldn’t think clearly and was unable to recall who and where she was, but it didn’t bother her – all she felt was that new sensation spreading through her; and she stared at Allan, and felt she was truly seeing him for the first time.

20 Breaking

Carolyn awoke, drenched in sweat. She was lying panting across her bed, a sharp headache paining her. She realized she was trembling when she slowly pushed herself into a seating position.

1,788 23
21 Saviour

He held her like that for quite a while but at some point he seemed unable to keep quiet any longer.
“Carolyn,” he whispered, and his voice was still rough with panic, trembling slightly, “Carolyn, what’s happened to you?”

1,929 19
22 Leaving

James was already there.
“Done?”
“Yeah.”
James hesitated, seeming to search for the right words. “Did you – did you find Sirius?”
Carolyn’s expression hardened. “No. But that’s fine.”

1,967 23
23 The truth

My plan of before seems to have worked so perfectly that you really do hate me, and I’ll stay out of your life just as you want it. But I will keep protecting you from dark magic, or rather, anything. Don’t worry, I’ll be able to do it without you ever noticing. My guess is that you want me to disappear completely and leave you without protection. But that, you cannot ask of me.

2,627 25
24 Summer

He stood there, right in front of her, so close she could feel his warm breath on her face. He was tall; taller than her, and she had to dip her head back slightly to look into his warm, grey eyes. The way he looked at her made the room start to spin around her, and he was just so beautiful …
And then Carolyn did the bravest thing she had ever done in her entire life.

3,303 21
25 Leaving again

And when the first rays of sunlight crept into the room she knew that she never wanted to go back.

1,707 25
26 Alone

But it was you who left, Carolyn. You left him alone, you hurt him, you broke him.

2,147 21
27 Realization

She sighed, gripping the table with one hand, her face scrunched up in concentration as she fought to keep herself from allowing memories and images to resurface. And yet she couldn’t prevent herself from saying quietly, “I did have fun … once.”
Tomas leaned forwards slightly, his brows furrowed. For a long while, he just stared at her, saying nothing. Then he exhaled slowly. “Well, who is he?”

2,090 22
28 Learning to live like a muggle

The woman passed for a short intake of breath, and suddenly, Carolyn realized what had struck her as weird about the woman and the house from the beginning.
It couldn’t have been plainer that it was a muggle household, and the woman sitting in front of her was definitely not a witch.
She spoke up for the first time. “And – and Sirius has been living here for …?”

1,528 27
29 Departure

It was getting dark.
