Ch. # Chapter Title Word Count Reviews
1 I

Subconsciously picking a strand of hair, you twirled it around your finger and glanced around the Hall. A pair of blue eyes pierced into your own. You glanced away and back down onto the empty golden plate, Ron already doing the same as you.

You felt a slight breeze against your exposed skin on your leg and a ruffle of clothes and Malfoy bent down next to you. “A Sopophorous bean?” He sat so close to you that normally he would have sneered and insulted you, and yet you could almost taste the lack of hostility in the air.

You grinned to yourself as Malfoy dropped his coat and very deliberately looked at you across the stadium.
You froze on the spot; his eyes locked on yours for a few moments. Pansy Parkinson certainly noticed Malfoy acting weirdly, not taking notice of her as he normally would have, nor of Goyle as he pulled a pie out of his pocket and began to eat very noisily. He hardly even moved. She nudged him, “Draco?” she asked timidly, “what are you looking at?”

“Need a hand?” He whispered behind you and a warm breeze ruffled the back of your hair. You didn’t turn around, you didn’t say anything; you just stood exactly where you were.
He paused for a moment but, slowly, raised his left hand up to the side of your face.

Malfoy wasn’t a killer: a bit of a twat sometimes but you couldn’t see him taking a life.
But Harry was completely sure of the fact that it was Malfoy who had planned this out, and there was nothing you could say to change his mind. And yet, when you thought back on it later, you couldn’t answer your own question as to why it mattered so much to you that Malfoy hadn’t done it.

“Eugh,” you threw your hands up in the air and took a deep breath, “why do you even care? I’m just a filthy Mudblood, right?”

“Not anymore.” He muttered.

“And why are you doing this? You hate me.”
“I hate your blood,” he muttered and glanced down at your Gryffindor crest, “and your house. But let’s face it,” he moved even closer and brought his voice down to a whisper, “you need me to be nice to you now more than you can ever admit."

He looked down and muttered to himself, “I’d wished it didn’t have to come to this.” Your eyebrows furrowed but your confusion was answered as soon as he opened his mouth again, “You’ve changed this year, Granger, and I don’t know what it is, but I feel as though I need to get to know you. I don’t want to leave Hogwarts knowing that I never took the time to find out the real you.”
You rolled your eyes and hit him on the chest, “That may work on the Slytherin girls, but not on me.”

Draco laughed a booming laugh and smiled down at you as you looked up in shock. “What?” He asked.
“I’ve never heard you laugh like that before.”
He laughed again. “And why would you? I hated you.”
“And now?”

Five years ago if someone had told you that you would sit in the library, opposite Draco Malfoy, laughing at one of his many stories about Goyle trying to wrestle his sandwiches off of the Giant Squid, you wouldn’t have believed it...

But now, you weren’t so sure what all of this meant.

“Merry Christmas…Draco.” You said, smiling.

“Merry Christmas, Hermione.” He flashed a brilliant smile back and walked quickly up to you. “Stay safe.” You looked at him in confusion but his eyes were closed and his chin was resting against your forehead, a small smile on his lips.

Neither of you moved. You stood, looking at each other, unable to move. It was as if you didn’t have a choice. His eyes seemed to hold you in the middle of the corridor, and your presence seemed to hold him next to you.
“See you in Potions…?” You couldn’t look away from him.
“Yeah, I suppose.” He repeated, but you both still looked at each other. He walked over to you slowly, still looking into your eyes, and stopped not inches away.

The silence continued and you looked away from him, but his hand was clamped around your jaw and he wouldn’t let go. “Hermione.” He murmured and you look back up at him. “Hermione, I don’t know what to say.”

“Just tell me that everything’s going to be alright.” You whispered and leant forward into his hands. “Please.”

He leant forward slightly and looked at you evenly. “Everything’s going to be okay, Hermione...”

He fixed his face into what he thought looked like a cocky smirk, “It’s all part of the plan.”

“I’ve said it once before, Malfoy; be careful. Because what I saw outside the common room didn’t look like the plan my father was told about.”

"...something I hadn’t seen in you before. And no, it wasn’t the brains; I think it was…the wit, if you understand me. Those notes made me see the real you, and I realised I didn’t need those people who called themselves my ‘friends’, so I spent less and less time with them and, eventually, they kind of accepted it.”

Draco internally sighed in relief. What he had said wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the full truth either...

By now it was Friday and it had been a week since you had last seen Draco. Not many people could disappear off the school’s radar without so much as a second glance, least of all Malfoy, and especially with that head of hair.

“Just who do you think you are?” You could taste the anger on your tongue, “Just who the hell do you think you are?”

“I,” he leant closer, “am Draco Malfoy.”

You looked down at your feet, unable to look in his eyes. He had sussed you out. The only one of your friends who had actually taken the time to try and find out what was wrong with you, and now that he knew about you and Draco, you felt as though you were standing in front of him naked, unable to do anything.

Potter was a menace, a stirrer, someone who needed to be stopped before he could do or say anything that would jeopardise this relationship he had with you. A relationship built on lies.

“Look, what did you want me to do?” He raised his voice, and made you stop. “Malfoy had it coming to him when he started picking on you at the beginning of the year!”

“You still don’t understand, do you?” You laughed darkly, “You can’t get it through that head of yours, can you?”

“What are you on about?”

Malfoy hated Snape talking to him in this way, like he was a child. He was far more than that! Surely he should remember that it was him whom the Dark Lord had chosen for one of his greatest plans, and not Snape. “And what would you even know about love?” He laughed vindictively, “You’ve never even loved another living soul.”

“No, I haven’t.”

22 XXII

“I love you.” You said, taking his face in your hands, “I love you for being so rude and prejudiced; I love you for sneering and your charisma; I love you for your wit and charm; I love you for daring to try things that other people would have run a mile from! And there’s nothing that you can do that’ll make me feel any different.”
