Charlotte Murray returns England after a few lonesome months working abroad. She misses her good friend Thomas the most but the discovery of a past affair concerning her father and the sinister Blackboon family quickly pushes them to opposite corners as both try to unveil the mystery surrounding main events of the history of the magical world.

Meanwhile, Charlotte tries to piece together parts of her past that she had chosen to leave buried years before, revealing her family relations and the fixation of the ever-present figure of William on her.
