Ch. # Chapter Title Word Count Reviews
1 Charlotte Elizabeth Aria Scout Grace

She was lying on the cold floor when someone found her, a pool of blood forming around her head. It wasn’t smooth; it was full of chunks and was still pouring out of the girl’s mouth. She was continuing to cough violently; but the pain was turning into numbness. Slowly, black started to creep into the ends of her vision. As the black closed in she could a blurry figure standing over her, her saviour, and he or she was either screaming or yelling. Then the girl’s world turned black.

2 James Sirius Potter, Prepare to Die

“I’m fine, Rose. I just-”

“-talk to Longbottom. Or your-”

“No! He’ll just make me quit-”

“You can’t play Quidditch forever, James!”

“Can you help me or not!”

“I will, but you have to focus.”

“I can’t, remember?”

“Still, James, you need to work on this.”

“I CAN’T HELP IT, ROSE! YOU THINK I LIKE THIS?”

3 The Battle (for lack of a better word)

As she was halfway to Gryffindor Tower Charlie started coughing again. It was violent and it felt like her throat was being ripped out. Charlie looked down at her hands. They were covered in blood. She had been coughing up blood the entire match; it wasn’t from her nose. She didn’t know how or why the fit started, but she was terrified she was going to die alone in a deserted corridor. Still Charlie could not cease the fit, and she eventually collapsed on the floor, too weak to move.

4 Enter James

“Still. You hurt her. A lot. More than you think you did.”

“I’m still scared for her! I’m the one who saw the blood coming out of her mouth! I saw her lying on the floor!” I yelled.

“Fine. This isn’t about you. It’s about Charlie. Now, why the hell was she coughing up blood? I thought she was taking medicine for a cold?”

“A cold. Not a sickness like that.” Albus replied. We sat there in silence, staring at the door. Waiting for news.

5 Breaking James

Promise to visit me in the loony bin? That’s all I ask, except for you find whoever did this to Charlie and damage them so bad he’ll be right there in the cooky castle with me.” I sighed. “This was supposed to be about Char. Not about me. Merlin, I am so self centered.” Before any of them could react Dad’s head appeared out of the office.

“James, could you come in here a minute?”

So, so screwed.

6 If Charlie's Only Hope Is Us . . . (She's Screwed)

“James, please. . . this is the second time. Just try?”

“I’m not going to talk to a shrink! I’m perfectly stable, thank you very much.” I tried to leave, but Dad sealed the door.

“Prove it. Read this.” The Healer handed me a complicated medical sheet. “Out loud.” I glared and attempted it. By the second line I was becoming more and more frustrated. On the third line I threw the paper down.

“I CAN’T BLOODY READ IT! IT’S ALL MUMBO-JUMBO AND HIGGLEWASH!”

7 Finally, Progress!

“Agent Hiss . . . do you read me?” I whispered to Albus, who happened to be right next to me.

“I am not Agent Hiss!” My brother replied indignantly, and I snickered.

“No need to throw a hissy fit, dear brother,” I replied, and he smacked me.

Confused? Maybe I should start at the beginning.

8 Numb

“They’re back, Lily,” Al said as soon as everyone else cleared out of the common room.

“The circles?” She asked, and he nodded. “I wish he wouldn’t keep everything bloody bottled up inside; it’s starting to eat him alive.”

“I haven’t seen them for a few years, but the one charm he’s really mastered is-” He started, running his hand through his hair.

9 The Day Everything Changed

“SNAP OUT OF IT!” I lifted my head from my desk. Oh, I was in Potions. I hadn’t realized that. Oops. . . what day was it? Never mind . . . I’ll just go back to sleep. (pretend to, that is)

10 Confusion

SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP! YOU DON’T KNOW A THING! HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO TELL SOMEONE . . . TO TELL SOMEONE WHAT I HAVE TO? DO YOU KNOW WHAT I JUST DID? DO YOU KNOW WHAT I’VE GONE THROUGH; WHAT I’M GOING THROUGH?” James turned to his father, his face contorted with rage. But something terrified Charlie even more. Even though his voice was filled with rage, his eyes were still hollow. James’s eyes were never dull or hollow; they were always twinkling or glinting slight madness as he preached about Quidditch.

11 Shattered

James’s family was going to lose so much, all because of her. But she knew she couldn’t possibly relate to them.

It was one thing to never have known a real family, and therefore never have seen it break, but it is an entirely different matter to watch a family shatter as they mourn a son they had to watch die.

12 Of Acceptance (Denial)

“THAT’S ENOUGH!” Dad was pisssssssed. Yes, I am even more immature than I was before. I was going to fight for this; I didn’t bloody care about living anymore, especially if it meant here, or locked up at home because they were scared I was going to off myself or something.

13 James's Last Stand Pt. I

“Charlie!” Charlie immediately turned around. It was Rose; she was crying.

“What is it? What happened?” There was only an hour before the match. Rose just cried harder, eventually she looked at Charlie, her eyes wide with fear.

“It’s James.”

14 James's Last Stand Pt. II

I just remember just being enthralled with the castle, and how it looked so beautiful no matter what the weather. And I remember watching the older kids goofing off after exams, the couples talking and hanging onto each other’s words like the fate of the world depended on it, the water fights, the duels . . .

15 Goodbye

“Goodbye,” she whispered, before placing a kiss lightly on his lips. Then she turned around, walking out of the room. She thought she saw a flash of red, (like Lily’s hair) but it was probably just her imagination. But one thought still plagued Charlie’s mind:

Maybe she had felt something stronger for James.

I love you forever
Forever and always
Please just remember even if I'm not there
I'll always love you forever and always

17 Coincidence . . . I Think Not!

“I’ve missed your humour.” But they knew this was no time to joke.

He’d be back.

18 Spiraling Down

“Down, girl,” Scorpius ordered, but Laurel stuck her tongue out. Fred then flipped her over, off the couch, and onto the floor. Charlie closed her eyes, fearing what would happen next.

“OW! YOU BLOODY BINT!” Fred shouted, and I saw Laurel’s quill sticking out of Freddy’s calf. Laurel shrugged.

“Be thankful my scissors are in my dorm,” she commented, before stepping over Freddy and onto her seat.

19 And They All Fall Down . . .

“Charlie knew who killed James. And she wrote it on this sheet of paper,” Rose announced, holding it up. She closed her eyes, and a floo grate appeared.

“Who wants to go get our mate back?”

20 Because Someone Needed to do Something Stupid and Heroic . . .

At least, though, she could say it was over. For them . . . lord knows the next generation of Potters, Weasleys, and Lupins would wreak havoc soon. It was in their blood.

21 The Aftermath

Suddenly, the door to the ward opened, and Al and Teddy walked back in. Al simply sat down next to Charlie, who turned to him.

“You alright?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

“Yeah. Now I am,” he replied, smiling slightly, his voice just as low. “You?”

“Yeah.” Charlie glanced at James, before returning the smile. And for once it was genuine. “I’m more than fine. I’m perfect.”

22 Epilogue

As they walked back up to the castle that night, Charlie couldn’t help but thinking a chapter of her life was over. She was leaving the fights and the tears she’d had with James behind where they belonged, at Hogwarts, and the next chapter would be simple; her hand in James, just as it was now.

Because that was all Charlie needed. And it was still perfect.
