“Maybe he decided he could be civil towards you over Christmas?” she said, an optimistic hope in her tone. All she got in response was a scoff. “You never know!” Lily added, small smile playing on her lips. 
“Yeah, and you’ll marry Potter by the end of the year!” Caroline said with overly exaggerated enthusiasm.

“So are you still going to avoid Black when we get back to Hogwarts?” Lily inquired.
“Probably not,” Caroline shrugged.
"Are you going to forgive him then?"
“Probably not,” Caroline said again.
“He said he was sorry,” Lily pointed out. 

“You think I could do worse than the arrogant idiot who spent his spare time getting on my nerves over the years, and when not busy doing that he’d be off bullying some other poor unsuspecting victim, or having the entire female body of the school fawning over him while he walks around like he’s better than any and all and god’s gift to the world?”

James had the decency to wait for the privacy of their dormitory before drilling Sirius on the events of the night. However, Sirius had his suspicions he only did so for the benefit of Remus and Peter, who were accidentally awoken when James crashed into a dresser and cussed at an unnecessary volume. Lily on her hand was not as patient.

“What’s got your knickers in a twist?” she asked, and James sniggered quietly into his hand from across the table.
“Nothing,” Sirius responded sourly with a dark glance in the direction of the Ravenclaw table. Caroline followed his gaze, looked at Sirius again and raised her eyebrows.
“Are you jealous?” she said surprised. James gave another snigger, not bothering with concealment this time.
