1 The prediction

 PROLOGUE

The Auror Department, the new Head Auror, and old woman and a crystal ball.

2 The assignment

“Lupin!” As often when one speaks of – or thinks of – the devil, his face turned up in the doorway. “This is your lucky day”, Barrett said. “I have an assignment for you, and a very special one… People in this department seem to like you, and I want to see if you can live up to what they’ve told me.”

3 The persuasion

A loud noise coming from behind them made both Harry and Teddy jump – someone had just slammed the door shut. Expecting to see a furious Lily standing behind them, Teddy turned his head. But it was not Lily’s dark brown eyes that met his – it was his father-in-laws. Bill Weasley’s face was bright red and his jaw was clenched. He stared challengingly at Teddy, as if he dared him to keep talking.

“What is Ben going to do to Dominique?”

4 The arrest

This was the house that Teddy had helped them move into – he had hung paintings on the wall, assembled furniture and levitated heavy moving boxes up to the second floor. And here he was now, in front of that same house, ready to kick in the door and drag one of his best friends out of there, forcibly if necessary.

5 The explanation

Teddy’s eyes flickered from his son to his wife, who was still staring at him.

“Yes, Dominique was really upset”, she said flatly. “Told me not to trust you, but she wouldn’t say why.”

A lock of her soft, blonde hair fell into her eyes, but she didn’t lift her hand to brush it away. She just stood there, motionless, and waited for him to explain what was going on.

6 The inquest

The sound of the door opening interrupted Barrett, who spun around and almost knocked an inkwell bottle on O’Hagan’s desk over in the process. He ignored it and smiled contently at the younger man.

“So we’ve got our proof!” he said. “This is what we’ve wanted all along!”

“Proof?” Teddy exclaimed. “What proof?”

7 The fault

Once again, she glanced down at the newborn and apologized inwardly for the fact that he had been born here, that this was the place where he would grow up, and that the woman in the bed was the one who would raise him.

Turning back to the woman in question, the midwife decided to give it another try. “Are you absolutely sure you don’t want to hold him?"

8 The invisibility cloak

“You!” Ben shouted, his eyes darkened with anger. “What have you done to me?”

“Ben, I’m here to help,” Teddy said. “I know that things have sort of spun out of control, but I’m really here because–“

“You said I’d be out of here after a day!” Ben continued, completely ignoring his brother-in-law’s attempt to calm him down. “You said you’d work things out for me!”
