Ch. # Chapter Title Word Count Reviews
1 Dear Remus

“I don’t know what to do.” Sirius admitted to Remus, his defeated voice barely louder than a whisper. His black shaggy mane concealed his reddened eyes, though he could easily spot the shadow of overgrown facial hair underneath. Remus walked slowly over to his distraught friend, each step measured and cautious.

2 Meredith

The sinister man spat a mouthful of blood on her black boots, causing her to dig the tip of her Ash wand deeper into his skin. The sides of his lips curled up his face, his beady eyes dancing with hers.

3 An Old Face

“Hello Meredith.” His calm, steady voice had not changed in their months apart. He still retained that calm, reserved demeanor that she had recognized in him years ago. Meredith took in a deep breath, exhaling steadily, “Remus.” There was a long pause, the atmosphere growing thicker with every second.

4 The Request

“Make no pretense,” Meredith snapped Sirius out of his daze from her authoritative voice, “I will help bring back my sister, but don’t expect anything other than that.”

“Never.” Sirius jibed, a smirk embroidering his chiseled features. Meredith glared at him, her eyes turning to slits with merely the tint of hazel.

5 Past Memories

“Then what about Remus? I can see you fancying him.” Lily’s voice was a bit too loud for comfort, and Meredith nearly clamped Lily’s mouth shut with her hand, "Keep your voice down!" she hissed under her breath, “Merlin's Beard, Lily.”

6 The Langley Affair

“So it is something?” At this, Remus started smiling in spite of himself. He chuckled at the satisfied expression Meredith wore as she surveyed them.

He began speaking before James could open his mouth, “Yes, alright, we need to talk to you.”

She sighed. Meredith browsed the length of the page before folding The Prophet over and looking up at them attentively, “You were saying?”

7 The Encounter

The stench of fire whiskey wafted into her nostrils, growing stronger as he sauntered past the doorway. For a moment, she envisioned him coming up to her, hugging her, kissing her, strangling her. Her nerves fidgeted.

8 Reconnection

Remus was close – very close – to discovering the thing she had wanted to tell him for so long. But she knew she couldn’t tell him, that she wouldn’t make it any easier for him. She sat very still, waiting for him to continue. But he didn’t, at least for some time.

9 A Day with Remus

"So what happened with Sirius?"

"He was upset."

"Oh, Really? Looked like you two were having a very plesant conversation about rainbows and pygmy puffs."

10 Dumbledore's Wisdom

"May I have a word, Ms. Crawford?"

He had delved into her pool of memories, known her innermost fears and nightmares, known the moments where her heart was lacerated, and experienced it re-growing over scars. She had handed him the key to her soul along with her pensieve, and being behind him in such close proximity to everyone else made her feel naked and vulnerable.

11 Detention

“This is the last place I’d expect to see you.” The case in front of her jiggled as he leaned his back up against it carelessly, crossing his arms in front of him for added effect.
“Odd,” she stated calmly, “This is exactly the place I’d expect to find you.”
“Compliments will only get you so far.”

12 Seeing Red

She looked up thankfully at a sound by the front of the room, expecting to see a tall wizard command the attention of the room with his mere presence. Instead, her eyes were met with a shockingly familiar head of red hair. The second she had realized who it was, Meredith couldn’t keep her eyes from her. Even though she wasn’t facing Meredith’s direction, she could still make out the steady face beneath the gentle waves of locks cascading across her shoulders.

13 A Series of Fortunate Events

“You have got to stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Popping up behind me. It’s starting to get… annoying.”

“Me? Annoying? First time I’ve ever been called that.”

“Oh yes, why would anyone ever think that you could be anything less than delightful?”

14 Talking Again

Meredith and Lily’s eyes met, still both smiling at the ridiculous scene they had just witnessed. Their eyes locked for longer than a moment, but eventually the humor within them dropped, and their expressions hardened. Slowly, they looked down from each other’s gazes. The awkwardness resumed. Lily bit her lip, wanting to interrupt the painful silence, but without one clue of what to say.

15 Saying Yes

Slowly, Meredith turned around to face the girls.

“Did Sirius Black just ask me out?”

“Yes.” Lily stated, her brilliant smile as bright as her eyes.

16 One-on-One, Three-on-Two

“You looked a little like a zombie for a minute there.” Marlene indicated at her with a spoon. Meredith shot her a cynical look, “Thanks. That's exactly what I need to hear before going on a first date, that I look like the undead.”

17 They Kissed

“Either way,” She flicked her gaze cautiously around the library once more, “I’m not sleeping until I’ve put up at least ten protective spells around the dorm. I’ll be damned if I wake up with a beak for a nose because people suddenly think I snogged Sirius Black.”
Lily raised an eyebrow, “But didn’t you?”
Meredith waved this away, “That’s not the point.”

18 The War Went On

“I’m not surprised the Death Eaters are having such an easy time picking us off. Wizards lose focus at their homes or walking down the street - never fully attentive. That’s how they got Marlene Mckinnon,” he threw in tactlessly, barely noticing the change in Meredith’s features...

“What do you like, then?” James had that sickly charm he always stuck to his words whenever he spoke directly to Lily, or in her general direction, or whenever she was in earshot really. Lily responded in her usual manner with a half-scowl and pursed lips.

“That’s clearly not what I said,” she asserted, “Stop twisting my words,” Sirius offered James a consolatory glance

20 The Ride Over

“Well I don’t see why they’d want you out of Hogwarts,” James announced, “It’s just about the safest place right now, what with Dumbledore being Headmaster and all.” Alice tried to suppress an eye-roll at his tactless manner of speech, but couldn’t manage to do so.

“Not for me,” Mary mumbled, fumbling with the letter in her hands.

21 Declan's Letter

“Remember when this was ours?” Sirius began wistfully, his eyes lingering on the silken sheets of the bed, “Feels like a thousand years ago.” His scan of the room ended with his calm eyes on her vigilant ones. She kept her expression stone-cold, waiting for him to move closer or say something to rouse her. His words hung in the atmosphere between them as he did neither.

22 Union

“Remus, what is it?”

“I guess no one’s told you, have they?” he sighed, closing his eyes for a moment to avoid seeing her inquisitorial stare.

“No, they haven’t,” she responded without much cadence to her tone. Remus didn't respond for a moment, leading Meredith to prompt him further, “Has something happened?…”

23 Intervention

“Meredith,” he hesitated, stroking her back as he gathered the resolve to continue, “I know you don’t believe for a second that Beth is the reason that you didn’t tell Sirius.”

Meredith pushed him away, her bloodshot eyes overflowing with a mixture of shock and betrayal, “You think I don’t love her?”

It didn’t take her much longer than a minute to lock eyes with a jeering Thorfinn Rowle.  She heard the rhythm of her pulsating heart in her ear as her sights narrowed on him, feeling fury rise further within her as he raised a glass of pumpkin juice up to her in a toast. He sipped it slowly, holding her eyes in his as he savored the sweetness of the juice gushing onto his tongue.

25 Their Mission

No matter how intently he stared at her, he couldn’t quite make out what she was getting at, “We’re toxic. I can't think - I can’t breathe when I’m around you…” As she words spilled from her mouth, she realized just how true they were.

26 Saying I Don't Love You

“Hey,” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. Sirius didn’t move, but she could interpret the shift in his breathing well enough to know that he’d heard her. Still, he didn’t respond.
