Thanks go to my beta Elaine. :-)
Dedication: I dedicate this one to Caytlyn, because she requested (and needed) a quick Jim Owie, involving a tennis game and a large fence.
The Sentinel
- The Game -
"C'mon, Jim. I guarantee you, we'll have a lot of fun", Jim mimicked Blair' s voice from earlier that day. "Yeah, right. It's always fun to sit in the waiting area of a damned hospital and wait for my ankle to be x-rayed."
"Jim, I'm sorry. But how could I possibly know that you'd pull such a stunt, huh?"
"It was *your* idea to start playing this stupid game. It was *you* who dragged me along."
"I know, I know. Does it hurt too bad?"
"What do you mean? My ankle or my arm?"
Before Blair could say anything else, a nurse came to take Jim to the x-ray.
Sighing, Blair leaned against the back of the chair.
~~~~~
Earlier that day, Blair had convinced Jim to go and play tennis with him, since he wanted to start something new. After some grouching from Jim's side, they'd finally arrived at the tennis court and Blair had given Jim a quick introduction to the rules of the game. They had played for about ten minutes, when Jim suddenly stumbled and obviously hurt his ankle really bad.
In the process of trying to catch himself before he hit the ground, he bumped into the fence that surrounded the court, leaving a large scratch on his right arm.
Of course, Jim had protested that he didn't need a doctor, his ankle was just fine, thank you! The protests didn't last much longer after Blair asked him to walk on his own, without any help. The wave of pain that shot through his leg was almost enough to make him scream.
The pain reflecting in Jim's eyes was all that Blair needed. Without saying another word, Blair had taken the keys and driven Jim to the hospital.
~~~~~
Two hours later, Jim came back - hobbling on crutches.
"Yeah, Jim. You were right. Your foot is okay, but how about the ankle?"
"Stop that, Sandburg. Okay, so it's broken. But still, it's all your fault."
"You in a lot of pain?"
"After the painkillers they gave me? Not anymore. At least, not until they wear off. Let's go, we have to get up early tomorrow."
"Oh no, Jim! You won't go anywhere for the next two weeks! You're supposed to stay off that leg and not chase any bad guys. "
"C'mon, Sandburg. I can still do paperwork", Jim started to argue.
"You won't do that! You're gonna stay at home and sleep in my room. You can't climb those stairs and sure as hell won't go anywhere outside the loft! And if I have to use your cuffs, be sure I'll do that."
"Okay. I give up."
On the way to their car, Blair's good mood faded as he realized what the coming days would be like. A cranky Jim at home. He could already hear him. 'I' m hungry, Blair.' Or 'I need something to do.' Or ' The music is too loud.'
A loud sigh escaped his lips as he started the engine.
