This is what I would have liked happen in the book Green Angle by Alice
Hoffman. I strongly recommend you read the book before reading this (It's
only 116 pages long, so it's a short read, but awesome)
I wanted the character Diamond to still be involved. I couldn't find a place to begin in the book. So I decided on the end. Every ending has its own beginning. So here it is.
I spent most of my days writing my story; my life. I especially enjoyed writing about Diamond. I missed him so much, and I thought of him every day. Every day that I would sit down to eat a vegetable that grew from "Diamond's" garden; I thought of him.
One day, remarkably, there came a knock at my door. I opened the door to see Diamond standing there. He had nothing hiding his face and I could see a tear on his cheek. He held up an article of clothing and a charred gold necklace. The necklace had a locket on it that opened. The locket was opened and had a picture of Diamond, before half of his face was burned, and a picture of what I assumed was his mother. Both pictures were slightly burned. A tear came to my eye and I knew what had happened.
I wrapped my arms around Diamond and squeezed; he returned my hug. I stepped back and let Diamond in. Diamond closed the locket and showed me the front. On the front was "Jacob and Elizabeth" engraved.
"Would you like me to call you Jacob?" I asked Diamond, and Jacob nodded his head.
Jacob looked around at the shelves filled with vegetables. He smiled and looked to me. I blushed and nodded my head. I offered him some of the vegetables. Instead of eating them he picked out several different vegetables and began cutting them up. He put together a vegetable soup. Jacob and I ate together that night; enjoying each other's company.
After dinner we sat at the table in the candlelight. Jacob was reading my story as I watched his eyes move over the paper. I stared at his face the whole time. I wondered if I could do anything about his burns; just take away a little bit of the pain.
I got up from the table and went through my cupboards. Jacob only glanced once at me and kept reading. I found an ointment my mother use to use on my sister and me when we had cuts. It helped heal them quickly. I pulled a chair over next to Jacob. Jacob took his attention away from the story and looked at me. I held up the ointment and Jacob nodded his head allowing me to put it on. I dabbed my fingers in the green paste and held it up to his face. He didn't wince at all as I applied the ointment. The paste sunk into the skin and was no longer visible. I put the ointment away and Jacob went back to reading my story. I noticed his eyebrow raise and I assumed he had come across the part about himself.
Minutes later he put the paper down and looked to me. Jacob nodded his head and smiled. I smiled back and got up. It was awfully dark and I was getting tired. I kissed Jacob's unburned cheek and began to walk to the stairs. Jacob got up and began to head out the door to the barn.
"You can sleep in the house tonight." I said.
Jacob turned and looked to me. I nodded my head in affirmation. Jacob smiled and followed me up the stairs. I showed him to my parent's old bedroom. He walked in and looked around. I could tell he liked it and so I went to my bedroom.
I lied in my bed thinking about the emotions I had felt when I touched Jacob's destroyed skin. There was definitely sorrow, gratefulness, and it almost felt like love; love for me. He doesn't know who I am now; I'm Green now. I'm not Ash anymore; Ash has disappeared. I fell asleep without finishing my thoughts.
I woke up in the morning and a scent from the kitchen drifted to my nostrils. I walked down the stairs and heard sizzling. I walked into the kitchen and Jacob was at the stove. At the table was a place setting for two. There were two mugs filled with well water, as well as two slices of my chestnut bread. Jacob turned around from the stove and scooped some of the food he had been cooking onto both plates. It looked like a mixture of tomatoes, corn, and a couple of herbs. I sat down and smelled the dish. It certainly smelled very good and tasty. Jacob sat down as well. He motioned for me to eat first. I lifted up my spoon and scooped a big of the concoction. I put it in my mouth and savored the taste. I nodded my head in satisfaction and Jacob began to eat himself. I had a bit of my chestnut bread and then a sip of my water.
I finished my meal before Jacob and got up to wash the dishes. As I washed the dishes I glanced down at my tattoos. I wondered if Jacob had noticed the different color. Jacob came up behind me and put his dishes in the sink. He grabbed hold of my hand and brought it up to his lips. He kissed my hand. I sensed that he knew I was different. He knew I had changed for the good. I turned to Jacob and looked up into his green eyes.
"My name is Green." I said firmly.
Jacob smiled and then he placed his hand under my chin. He lifted my chin up and leaned over to kiss me. His lips were soft and reminded me of smooth chocolate. My eyes were still closed when he pulled away. I blushed and turned back around to finish the dishes. I was Green, I was shy.
After I finished the dishes I sat back down at the table and collected my papers together. Jacob had gone outside, for what I did not know. I began writing my story again. I kept a smile on my face. I was Green, in love and smiling without a care in the world.
:Hope you enjoy. More to come soon!:
