Because I think if Eliot is afraid of anyone, its Nate.
Dating
"Oh, I almost forgot, we're having a cookout this weekend, you should bring your boyfriend."
Maggie's brow furrowed and her lips pursed slightly, "I don't have a boyfriend." She told her friend.
It was Janice's turn to furrow her brow, "Of course you do, Eliot, you talk about him all the time."
"Eliot and I aren't dating." Maggie laughed.
"Really?" even without the doubting tone, the raised eyebrows and knowing look in her eyes, Maggie could tell her friend didn't believe her.
"How do you figure that Eliot and I are dating?"
"Maggie, you talk about him all the time. "
"So."
"He sent you flowers last week."
"It was my birthday."
"He comes to your house and makes you dinner."
"That's not fair, he just likes to cook. We're friends."
"How many days out of the last week, two weeks, have you talked to or seen him?"
"…We're friends, so what if we talk a lot. I've talked to you every day for the past two weeks too."
"Maggie, face it. You've got a boyfriend."
Maggie was silent for a minute, all of her and Eliot's interactions running through her mind.
"Nate is going to kill him."
"Eliot, can I ask you a question?" Maggie asked as she set down her cup of tea and book, phone wedged between her ear and shoulder.
"What's up?"
"Well, I was wondering."
"Yeah?"
"When did we start dating?"
"…What are you talkin' about? We aren't dating. Are we?" confusion leaked into his final question as he began to see where she might get the idea. It wasn't that he hadn't considered asking Maggie out (he had), he just didn't understand why she would think they were.
"I think we might be. I was talking to Janice and I realized, we kind of are."
"No, I mean, yeah we hang out a lot. And yeah we talk pretty often. But if we were dating, it would be every day. Right?"
"Eliot, we do talk everyday."
"oh. Well, we don't- no. If we were dating we would- oh."
"Maggie?"
"Yeah?"
"When did we start dating?"
She laughed. "I'm not sure. Somewhere between the dinner and sleepovers I'd imagine."
"Well, in that case. Maggie, would you like to go to get coffee with me this Saturday?"
"Why Eliot, are you asking me on a date?"
"Yes ma'am." He smiled at her laugh and hoped she say yes.
"I would love to."
"good."
"..Maggie?"
"hmm?"
"Nate's gonna kill me."
