"Hi, and what is your name?" What? I thought. I had blanked out… again. I straightened my new ironed skirt nervously. It was part of the uniform I had to buy
"Ummm, Kara. Kara Dent." I lied. I had to stop, I had to tell her who I really was, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Kara sounded like a nice name, a normal name.
"Well, okay then Miss Dent." The lady at the desk looked unsure, as if she knew what was really going on. Crap! She was suspicious! I thought, but just as soon as it crossed my mind she said, brighter now, "Okay, here's your schedule." I muttered my thanks as I grabbed the newly typed schedule, as hurriedly hiked out the door.
As soon as I was out of the office, I slowed down. Franklin Roosevelt High School was bigger inside than out. I had only been in one other time, last week, when I was touring the building; and it was nothing like Missouri.
But this wasn't Missouri; this was Kentucky, right outside the capital of Frankfort. I was originally from good old Missouri, the "Show-Me State." We had always bordered the state of Kentucky, but I lived up in Maryville, which is up in the opposite direction of Kentucky. But now I lived here, in this non-Missouri state. And I didn't really love it.
I thought about this while I stumbled around the high school. Make a left, no a right! I was so lost…
"Do you need help?" asked a voice, stifling a laugh. I spun around as fast as I could. Standing behind me was a guy, kind of tall, kind of skinny, but totally hot. He was ripped, only a little, his muscles bulging through the navy jacket of our school uniform. He had blonde, shaggy hair and his grinning face was dotted with freckles, making him look almost like a surfer. He loosely clutched a calculus book and a notebook.
"Ummm a little…" I gave a faint smile. "I'm Kara." I stumbled on my new name a little, if he knew who I really was, he would flip out.
"Conner." He effortlessly slung out his hand for a handshake and I shook it gratefully. Not too hard! Not limp! Wait! Too long!" I quickly let go.
"So, what's your first class?" he asked.
"Ummm… It's…" I was so flustered that I dropped all of my forms in the process of attempting to find my stupid schedule.
He laughed at me as he bent down to help me pick everything up. As he offered them to me, I noticed three very obvious things that, surprisingly, I hadn't noticed previously.
The first, that Conner had amazingly bright blue eyes. God, how could I not have seen them before? I soon as I looked into them, I was hypnotized. I couldn't stop staring in the pools of aqua inside his eyes.
And because I realized this first thing, I also became conscious of the second thing; it being that I wanted to kiss him really, really bad. I had had a boyfriend back in Missouri, but we never really did anything. I had not even had my first kiss, when girls my age were already freaking pregnant. But I had never had this urge with my ex-boyfriends. I wanted to just grab him and press his lips to mine.
And then, the third thing, which has nothing to do with the first two, could probably be the most important. While Conner was picking up my papers with me, he reached out his hand and I saw it. On his thumb, close to the palm was a tiny half-moon shape. When it was exposed, Conner immediately pulled his jacket sleeve lower and glanced at me to see if I saw. I looked away and we went back to picking up my stuff, which was lying all over the hallway.
But this wasn't even the weirdest part. The weirdest part of my whole encounter with Conner was that I had the exact same shape on my ankle. Was he… the same?
