AH! A Good Man Goes To War! Ah! So amazing, but it got me thinking about the first time the Doctor meets River, and the singing towers. My take on what he thinks about them and the last time he saw her before she dies…

AN: I own nothing.

He could never deny her anything.

He would buy her anything. If she asked him to buy her Earth, Jupiter, or the entire star belt of Orion, he would.

She doesn't ask for these grand gestures.

He would take her anywhere she asked. If she asked, he would take her to her parents home to visit them. He would bring back Gallifrey, if she asked.

She doesn't ask for those grand gestures.

He would do anything she asked. If she asked him, he would make her a TARDIS of her own. He would make her own sonic screwdriver. If she asked.

She doesn't ask for that sort of gesture.

Sometimes, she mentions that she would like to visit somewhere with music. Maybe, she suggests, somewhere with music and a view?

"Later," He replies, "But right now, doesn't" and here he says anything, everything, that he thinks will interest her, "sound more fun?"She doesn't always agree, but she lets it go and helps him pilot the TARDIS to where ever he proposed. She doesn't bring it up for a few more weeks. Sometimes, even two months goes by, and she doesn't mention it.

The first time she brought it up, he froze, and almost said, "No. Never."

But he could never deny her anything.

Sometimes she looked older than he last saw her. Sometimes she looked younger. Sometimes he isn't so sure.

And sometimes, when she would ask, he would promise, "Someday."

"Soon?"

"I don't know." he'd respond. Or "Spoilers." (he liked being able to say that to her, even if it hurt). Or "Not as soon as you'd like."

Usually, he would just say, "Later."

It would be later. He would have to. But it would have to be later. He wouldn't allow it to be any sooner.

He could never deny River Song anything. He would take her anywhere.

Now is not the time for music though. Not that sort. His River Song was not Amy and Rory's Melody, who was sung quiet songs and lullabies. River needed loud music, drums, electric guitars and those odd things they had in the Gamma Forest that was kind of like the instruments that sound like thunder, except for the bit where it also made the sound of rain and lighting too. River could play it really well. She laughed at him when he played it the first time and got zapped.

She loved music.

He could never deny her anything.

But he was afraid that sooner or later, someday would be there too soon.
