Rosemarie Hathaway, legendary badass and killer of Strigoi, was afraid of bugs.
Not just any bugs, mind you, but flying ones.
It was sad, really. Rose could face swarms of Strigoi without batting an eye. In fact, she'd been trained to do just that, but the moment any flying insect – moths, mosquito eaters, bees, butterflies, even the occasional fly if it was big enough – came towards her, she'd freak out. Scream and swat at it with no coordination just pure desperate fear. Rose sat in her room, typing on her laptop, when a movement caught her eye. As Guardian for Queen Vasilisa Dragomir, Rose wasn't on duty during their summers at Court, so she could sit around and do whatever she wanted, just as long as she checked in with her charge every now and again and, as said Queen was also her best friend in all the world, that wasn't a very hard rule to follow But, like most dhampir Guardians, she was on a vampiric schedule. "Middle of the day" for her meant that the sky was pitch black – around 1 am. The perfect time for moths and crane flies and other flying demons to intrude on her peace and quiet.
And oh boy was that a big moth.
"DimITRI!" Rose screeched, bolting for the broom that stood by her doorway, just for such occasions. She opened the door to the room without taking her eyes off the intruder, chancing a glare at the ineffective screen on her open window. She took a couple shuffling steps forward towards the moth, swinging the broom – bristles up – with a battle cry, as if the broom were a sword and the moth, a dragon. From down the hall, she could hear Dimitri approach at a normal pace – much too slow for such a dire situation, in her opinion. "Dimitri! There is a monster in my room! Kill it!"
"Again, Roza?" Dimitri chuckled with amusement in his voice. He held a small glass and a piece of paper, approaching the moth.
"No, don't take it outside! It'll just come back in again! You gotta kill it!"
Dimitri simply shook his head. Oh sure, for all Rose's bravado on the battlefield, she sure did turn into a girl when it came to bugs. It was kinda cute. He captured the moth and released it outside, returning to the distraught Guardian."Come on, Roza. It's gone now," he said soothingly, sitting down on the bed and pulling a trembling Rose into his arms. He gently ran his fingers through her hair while she pressed closer to him, inhaling his scent. After nearly an hour, she finally calmed down, but not before muttering something about evil, traitorous window screens. Dimitri chuckled and kissed the top of her head, knowing that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the window screen.
Rosemarie Hathaway, legendary badass and killer of Strigoi, was afraid of – flying – bugs.
And Dimitri kept letting them in.
