"It's just the wind."
He had believed it, too, the foolish boy, who dreamt of kings and pirates and high-sea escapades, of knights in shining armor and dragons and noble quests, of wizards and mermaids and other worlds. He dreamt of perfect, but (there could never be perfect) so he dreamt of the impossible, forgetting about reality and it's untimely horrors.
(forgetting about cold and black and growing and suffocating and screams and falling and death and fragile and roses and crashing and terrible and empty and chaos and lies and hurt and wrong and lightning and fire and deception and watching and frigid and red and blood and silent and imperfection)
He dreamt about all those wonderful, beautiful, perfect things, but forgot about the monsters.
There were monsters, not in the Secret Place at the base of the tree trunk, but in his heart and their hearts and he didn't notice (it's just the wind, Sora!) until it was too late and his impossible dreams became tainted with reality.
'Untimely horrors' -- that's what reality was all about, about the cold, hard truth and that was what did him in; he was said to have "grown up" but that might as well have been one of his dreams too, for it was far from the truth. The monsters invaded his innocence and demolished his impossible fantasies, destroying what made Riku Riku.
So Riku was no more and Dreams were no more and he lost everything and anything and what was left?
The monsters poisoned his heart, poisoned so many hearts and ruined perfect, everyone's perfect ... except hers.
She was perfect in every manner of the word, so perfect, too perfect to be spoiled by monsters or to dream of impossible; she was impossible. And him, he was impossible too, he was living Riku's perfect dreams, that were said to be unattainable, and he had everything.
He still believed, while Riku didn't, and that made Sora the cure. Vanquisher of the monsters, the knight in shining armor, but that wasn't real! And that was the monsters talking, jading Riku's mind, turning it cynical and grown up. So it wasn't real after all, just an imagination, there was no antidote to the monster's venomous ardor and there never would be.
He had forgotten before of reality, of imperfection, of monsters. Now it was all he knew, forgetting fantasy, kings and pirates and high-sea escapades, knights in shining armor and dragons and noble quests, wizards and mermaids and other worlds. Of wonderful, beautiful, perfect things, and that was how Riku shattered himself, bit by bit by bit until there was nothing left to destroy.
On a tiny island floating in the dark abyss of nowhere at all, nonexistent wind rustles through the leaves of a tree, and the whistle sounds faintly of monsters.
