Why is he still with her?
Other than the fact that she's definitely a hottie, she is not the sort of person he has ever imagined himself with.
He's always been driven, focused, reserved. She... Well, the first time he invited her to the bar with him and some of his friends, he had started to make a mental list of the number of topics she covered in her initial conversation with one of those friends. He had lost count at seventeen. And that was just in the first five minutes. Reserved, nope. Focused, not really. And the only thing she seems especially driven to do is be with him. Forever. Which is a long time.
She has a thousand and one irritating habits, and new ones keep cropping up. She can't sit still, and even his mental image of her is bouncing, hands constantly fluttering. She can't be quiet, to the point that when they go their separate ways he keeps hearing her voice for hours. She's probably the worst Xbox player he's ever met. Her characters always end up wherever they aren't supposed to be—off cliffs, into enemy fire, out of bounds... He slaughters her every time, and she never even cares. She says he's cute when he wins.
Neither of them care about anything the other talks about. How can she not notice that he stops paying attention as soon as she mentions a celebrity name? How can she not notice the panic in his eyes when she starts talking about babies? How can she not feel her own eyes glazing over when he seizes a rare moment in which she is taking a breath to insert a story of his own about business school?
Yesterday he sent his resume off to corporate, looking to further his business career. He decides that if he gets the job he should break it off with her for real, because taking her to the city with him is a lot more than he's ready to handle. Maybe he should start pushing her away gently, make it easier for her if and when the blow falls. (He isn't going to stick around here forever, even if this job falls through.) He imagines himself in the city, going to bars and talking to strange women like he used to do before his relationship with the strangest woman he's ever met. Free. He feels empty and figures he's probably just hungry.
As he looks through his refrigerator, she calls him sobbing because she just read that Brad and Angelina are having relationship problems. He listens to her for a few minutes before she has him hold on just a second so she can pay for the items she has in her grocery cart, and the offending magazine is so not one of them. She asks him if she can come over, because she really isn't feeling like being alone right now.
He has a ton of stuff he'd rather do than listen to her cry over people she'll never even meet, but he closes his refrigerator door and says yes. As he hangs up he catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror over the sink and sees he is smiling.
Why is he still with her?
He can't explain it.
