Warning: this is an AU story. It was inspired by a story my brilliant friend Jessie and I are writing together.
Information:
Sam is 8 years old.
Charlie has full custody of her.
Jenn and Charlie are good friends even though they aren't together anymore.
Jenn is an alcoholic. Charlie is concerned about her.
Charlie's father is trying to pressure him into doing things in a way that he thinks is not a good way of doing it
Sam and Charlie are like best friends
Sam and Jenn are very close when she's sober
Charlie smiled to himself as he watched his beautiful eight year old daughter sleeping. She always slept in the middle of her bed. It was part of her OCD. Everything had to be in the middle. Everything had to be evenly balanced. She would wash her hands for hours at a time. It was one of the few things that was troublesome about Sam. But Charlie would have given anything for his little girl.
He bent down and kissed the crown of her head marveling about how much he had changed since the eight years she came into this world. He gave up baseball when she came into the world. She needed consistency. He also decided he was not going to raise his child the way that his father raised him. He had to learn different ways. His thoughts were
interrupted by the sound of the phone ringing.
"Hello," he said picking it up.
"Hey Charlie guess what? I'm sober today."
"Hey Jenn," Charlie said, "Guess what. I'm proud of you."
"Thanks," Jenn said, "I want to take Sam to Disney world."
"You mean the one in Florida," Charlie asked.
"No Charlie the one in the land of make believe," Jenn replied sarcastically, "I heard Mr. Rogers is opening up a new ride."
Charlie could hear her rolling her eyes.
"Sorry Jenn," he said, "There is no way I'm going to allow that."
"But you said you were proud of me," Jenn pointed out.
"I am," Charlie said, "What I'm not is crazy. You were drunk just yesterday. How am I supposed to trust you in
another state with our daughter."
"Charlie I promise I won't get drunk," Jenn said.
"No sorry Jenn," Charlie said, "Maybe when you've been sober for a longer period of time."
"Charlie please," Jenn begged, "It's important!"
"Why is it so important," Charlie asked.
"Well I kind of promised Sam," Jenn admitted.
For a moment Charlie felt like getting mad at Jenn. He took a deep breath and counted to ten.
"Why did you do that," he asked, "and were you drunk when you did."
"I just missed her so much I wanted to do something special with her," Jenn said, "and a little bit."
He made a quick decision. He couldn't let Sam down.
"Fine," he said, "You may take her but I am going with you. I will not let her be at risk."
"Alright," Jenn said, "Can I see her tomorrow?"
"Come over around 8," Charlie said.
"Cool," Jenn said, "Maybe I could take her to fun zone."
"We'll see," Charlie said.
"Is that a no," Jenn asked.
"No it's an 'it depends on if you're drunk or not," Charlie replied.
