This story is set in the end scene of The Quest Part 2. It is written from Vala's POV. I got the idea while watching the episode on TV. Not to mention the fact that it's like three in the morning and I get really emotional when I stay up too late. Hope you enjoy. Daniel rocks.

The Hardest Part

I looked around, amazed, as the blue lightning struck down the Ori soldiers.

"What was that?" Mitchell asked, echoing my thoughts.

"I don't know," Sam answered moving quickly in front of the DHD, "but I say we don't stick around to find out. Dial out of here before anyone else can dial in," and she set her words into action.

"I'll go check on Daniel," I volunteered, but I had barely taken two steps before the archeologist in question flew out of the cave entrance and landed hard on the ground. I knelt beside him, laying my hand on his dark hair. "Daniel?" I queried. I received no reply. Mitchell had knelt beside Daniel as well and his attention was drawn suddenly to the cave entrance. I followed his gaze to see Adria standing there. Mitchell, Sam, and Teal'c fired at her simultaneously, but her force shield easily deflected them. They lowered their weapons.

"Why do I even bother?" Mitchell sighed.

Standing up and trying to look as imperious as possible (which wasn't too difficult due to anger and fear), I stared at her. "Adria, I want you to stop this right now."

She looked at her, her expression unreadable. "I'm sorry it has to be this way mother," she said. Lifting her hand, an orange flame suddenly appeared. I knew then that she was going to kill us. Suddenly, Daniel had pushed me out of the way and was deflecting Adria's blast.

"Get to the gate now," he ordered, his voice strained.

"We're not leaving you here!" Sam objected, various emotions evident in her voice.

"I'll be right behind you," Daniel replied. Mitchell grabbed me and pulled me to the stargate. The last vision I had was of Daniel kneeling in the leaves, hands raised, protecting us from a stream of orange light emanating from Adria's hands. Then we were stumbling down the ramp at Stargate Command. I waited for Daniel to come through, waited for his familiar figure to appear on the ramp. But he never appeared. The gate shut down and he wasn't there. We had left him behind. I blinked back tears, realizing again what Mitchell had meant. "The hard part about being part of this team is not risking your own life. It's watching your friends take chances with theirs." He was right.
