I know this is a short chapter, but I couldn't get any more out of it without it being completely redundant. I hope you enjoy and read what comes next.
I knew I had to tell him that I knew the truth of him. I knew without a doubt he was in love. I was disheartened in knowing that it wasn't with me. I saw the way he looked at me and compared it to how he looked at her. There was a vast difference. His eyes sparkled when he looked at her. His pupils dilated taking in as much of her beauty as he could. A smile tugged at his lips when she spoke. I used to see those same reactions from him when he looked at me.
"I can see it in your eyes." I said to him one night over dinner.
"What do you mean?" he responded.
"I can tell you are in love with her. I can see it in your eyes."
"I don't know what you are talking about." he denied. I could sense he wasn't going to admit his feelings without a fight.
"I know, without a doubt, that you love her. Which is why this has to end." I said. "I can't continue living this lie…"
"It's not a lie." he interrupted me. "I'm not denying anything…"
"Yes you are. You used to look at me the way you look at her, only with her it is more intense, it's filled with more love and devotion. I'm sad that you can't feel that way with me, but I know I can't stand in the way and keep you from someone you love. I can't continue being around you."
"What are you saying?" he asked, reaching out to take my hand. I pulled it out of his grasp.
"I'm saying we are through. I have requested a transfer to New York, where my work is needed more so than in D.C."
"No…"
"Don't try to stop me. You love her, I've known since we came home, I just didn't want to say anything. Now it has just become to unbearable. You need to tell her. I can see the way she looks at you, she loves you too, Seeley."
His face, although subtle, flashed a glimmer of hope when I said those words, confirming my need to leave. I gathered my purse and left. Out of his life forever.
