LEFT UNSAID

He ran into the ruined house, his heart beating fast and panting. What if he was too late? He couldn't bear to think it. He ran inside, his adrenaline pumping. Finally he reached the door, which had been blown apart and which wood was splintered. His eyes scanned the interior, fear growing inside him. She had to be here, alive, even if holding on for one last breath. He had to see her. Upstairs, he heard the faint sound of crying and on instinct, ran up the stairs, nearly tripping in his haste. He ran down the demolished hallway and came to a stop in front of the room from where he had heard the crying. He stared at the sight before him, tears forming in his eyes at the sight of her lying motionless on the carpet. The crying child reached out to him from his crib, but he paid no heed and numbly made his way to the motionless figure and knelt by it. Unexpectedly, the figure opened its eyes and weakly reached for his hand.

"You…came." The words seemed hard for her. She looked up at him and tried to smile.

"I...couldn't have stayed away…not tonight." He looked at her with tears in his eyes, wishing that this was all just a dream and that she wasn't about to die.

"Thank…you…I…I…wanted to be able…to tell you…I…I've loved you all my life…and…I'm sorry…" She touched his face softly and closed her eyes. "Take…take care of Harry for me…Sev…promise me…"

"I…" He looked at the crying child and so did she. "I…I promise…for you…for us…" She smiled.

"Good-bye, Severus…" And with that, Lily Evans Potter took her last breath as Severus Snape held on tightly, watching in horror as she slipped away from him into death, tears falling down his cheeks.
