A/N: This is just a one-shot songfic for the Billie Holiday song "I'll Be Seeing You". I usually don't care for songfics, but this one has a special meaning to me.
Sokka rolled over on his sleeping mat. He couldn't fall asleep, no matter how hard he tried. His mind was just too full. And too confused. He sighed and climbed to his feet. The night was almost over; he knew tomorrow he would be unbearably tired. But there was no getting to sleep now.
He staggered out of his room and out to the balcony of their guesthouse in Ba Sing Se. He overlooked the city, vaguely interested, but mainly wishing for some relief from the thoughts that plagued him. Yue was gone. While he loved Suki, and felt a pang in his heart not knowing if she was safe, he could not forget the princess easily. She had given up everything for her people. And Sokka hadn't been able to stop her. He knew that guilt, that memory would stay with him forever. He would think of her often, and see her wherever he looked.
I'll be seeing you
in all the old familiar places
that this heart of mine embraces
all day through…
Sokka raised his eyes up to the moon. It was full tonight. And it was her. Yue's face smiled down at him. The spirit of the moon had been given new life by the girl he had lost. And she watched over him now.
I'll be seeing you
in every lovely summer's day
in everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way…
Her laugh. Her smile. She was so beautiful. Hair as white as snow and her face as gentle as a grazing tide on the shore. She was there. She would always be there. He could see her now, if he looked hard enough. If he just looked up…
I'll find you
in the morning sun…
He could just see a rising blue and pink tint to the sky; a new day was dawning. The sun was beginning to rise, and soon the moon would be gone. But it was never really gone. Just out of sight. Like the swamp bender had said "Time is an illusion, and so is death." It made sense to him now. She was not really gone. Not gone…
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
but I'll be…seeing you
