"What are you doing after school?" He asked her as they walked down the nearly empty hallway. They were waiting for the bus to pick them up. It was the last day of school and the bus was late, go figure.

"She's going to the diner." Her friend answered for her. Ignoring the blonde girl, brunette continued the conversation, "What she said…Do you want to come to?" Blondie elbowed her as they heard kids running to the bus. The girls raced out the school doors.

As he stood alone in the hallway he whispered, "Sure…"

"There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all"

When the school year of 1962-63 let out it was the one of the greatest moments of any of their 12 years of living. Elementary School was easy; those years seemed to breeze by. But with 6TH grade you can forget it. Never had months dragged on soo slowly. Everything was much more complex and just the thought of Junior High and High School, God bless them.

"But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection"

The teachers were strict and annoying. Especially that Social Studies teacher Mrs. Zittle, who always said 'Oh dear' if something went wrong. Which happened a lot with Jacob G. For everyone music was the easiest class, hands down. Mr. Briggs was so laid back it wasn't over stimulating to the brain in his class but, you could also fall asleep.

"For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I'll love you more
"

Anyway this story isn't about all that. The summer of 1963 was a season full of self-discovery, changes, friendships, and of course baseball. It wasn't as great as the one before, I mean nothing could top that. But it was one for the record books. A few friends were lost but, that's the way the cards were dealt. Sometimes the cards were unfair to them. And sometimes they were winners from the begging. (I hope you understood the metaphor).

The kids of the Sandlot learned more than one lesson from that summer. And they gained a whole lot of memories, too.

"Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I'll love you more"
