Kagome walked into camp from her bath at the hot spring and stopped mid-stride. In front of her were Inuyasha and Shippo. They were down on all fours, almost nose to nose, the last piece of roasted fish sticking out of the campfire between them. In his agitation, Shippo had stuck his tail almost straight out from his body and fluffed to its fullest capacity. He had taken a deep breath to puff out his chest, trying to appear larger than his tiny stature. Even though Inuyasha had no tail or fur, his ears were rigid, facing forward, and his body was completely focused on pouncing on the fox kit. Both males were snarling, growling and making small, menacing barking sounds at each other, neither willing to back down. Kagome could tell right away they were having a face off over the last piece of fish and neither canine was willing to lose his prize.
Kagome walked quietly over to Sango and Miroku who were standing off to the side of camp, watching the show. Sango was poised, ready to intervene between the two friends if necessary. Miroku, on the other hand, stood grinning, clearly amused.
"How long has this been going on?" Kagome asked to no one in particular. Sango responded first.
"Since just after you left for the hot spring. We were cleaning up when those two noticed the last piece of fish. Inuyasha went to grab for it when Shippo decided he should get it because he's the smallest and bit Inuyasha on the hand to stop him. It was a challenge to Inuyasha and they both went down on all fours. They've been like this ever since."
Miroku leaned over toward Kagome and said, "This has been quite amusing, Kagome! Especially the barking and growling. Seeing these two on their hands and knees, fighting over a piece of fish…" Miroku chuckled, shaking his head.
Before anyone could stop her, Kagome walked over to the fire, plucked the fish-on-a-stick out from between the fighting friends, and promptly began to eat it as she turned, walking away. The camp instantly fell silent, every one staring at her, mouths agape. She stopped, turning toward her companions.
"What?! I was hungry and no one else was eating it." Kagome shrugged, tossing the empty stick into the fire.
