If someone had to use one word to describe each of Inu no Taisho's sons, they would choose pride for Sesshomaru and humiliation for Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru's existence revolved around pride. He was proud to be the ruler of The Western Lands. He was also proud to be the first-born son of Inu no Taisho. He was also too proud to ask for help. He was too proud to admit his father may have had something to teach him about human companions. Pride kept him from choosing a mate or having friends because he didn't want to appear weak. He didn't help his brother after his mother died because he was too proud to be associated with a hanyou.
Inuyasha knew nothing but humiliation. He and his mother had been driven out of her village because she had humiliated her family by mating a demon. He had been humiliated as a child because he was a hanyou. Humiliation kept him from finding self worth. He was too humiliated to tell Kagome how he felt, keeping him from her. Humiliation had kept him an outcast living a solitary life.
Pride and humiliation walked hand in hand with the brothers in a way the brothers never would, keeping them from being who they could be to the world and each other.
