Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. First of all, he
hated summer holidays more than any other time of the year. Second, he
wished to do his homework, but was forced to do it in the middle of the
night. Finally, he was a wizard.
Almost midnight, Harry was leaning on his arm, gazing at the leather- bound book propped up on the pillow. Harry groaned and rolled over, thinking about the essay Professor McGonagall had assigned the entire Transfiguration class the last day before vacation. He had to fill seven parchments on the process of becoming an Animagus and the dangers while transforming. Only two years ago, Harry, Ron, and Hermione had discovered that Ron's rat, Scabbers, was an Animagus. They had seen what they thought was an innocent rat, transform into a short, balding man named Peter Pettigrew. Harry clenched his fists at thought of Peter Pettigrew, who had betrayed his parents and caused their death. Harry flicked through the pages of A History of Magic. His brightly-colored sugar quill stopped at the top of a good-looking page. Harry dabbed his quill in ink and started writing.
To become an Animagus, you must first be registered with the Ministry of Magic. After this, Harry sucked on the tip of his quill, and thought about what to write next. His mind wandering, Harry scanned the skies for any signs of Hedwig, who had been away over a week. Suddenly a shadow in the corner of his eye caught his attention. Harry quickly stood up and went to the window. A bizarre shape was speeding toward his window, turning somersaults in the air. Harry, finally realizing what it was, opened the window, and jumped out of the way. Four owls, of which Harry recognized three, flew onto the bed and collapsed in a heap. Harry briskly separated the owls. One of them was Hedwig, Harry's own snowy owl. She nipped Harry affectionately, and then flew off to her cage. Another one, which was currently flying around the room at top speed was Ron's owl, Pig. Harry could faintly see a letter tied to one of Pig's small, skinny legs. The third owl was from Sirius Black, Harry's faithful godfather. Harry wondered whom the fourth one would be from. He eagerly approached the unidentified owl, waiting to open the letter. Unexpectedly, Harry heard the bedroom door of Dudley Dursley's creak open.
