Robin felt strange. Everything seemed floaty, and he couldn't hear anything. The bone numbing coldness of the Gotham harbor disappeared as he felt a warmth spread through his whole body.
He sat up, surprised to find his arms no longer tied behind his back. The cuts on his arm were gone, and he sat up, finding the pain in his leg no longer there.
Everything was white, and in the distance he could hear the sound of birds chirping. "Dick."
Robin spun at the quiet voice, not expecting to hear anyone else. Standing behind was a woman. She wore a pink, flowy dress, and clasped around her neck was a string of pearls. He reconized her instantly, he had seen her portrait above the fireplace everyday since going to live with Bruce.
"You're Martha Wayne!" He said, his widened. He then realized he wasn't wearing his mask. He looked down, expecting to see his Robin uniform. Instead he was wearing a plain white shirt and black pants.
"Yes, dear. I am. Oh, you've grown so much!" She said, walking up to him. She placed a hand on his cheek. He was shocked to find it ice cold, like the water he'd just drowned in.
"But... That means I'm..." He couldn't bring himself to say it. There was no way... He couldn't be dead, could he?
"Dead?" When he nodded, Martha sighed and smiled ruefully at him. She was really pretty, considering she had been a bit on the older side when she died. Her hair was lighter than Bruce's, but her eyes were the same shade of blue. "Technically, but if I know my son, he's with you right now."
They were silent for a moment. "Mrs. Wayne?" He asked. She flinched slightly.
"Please, Dick, call me grandma."
He smiled at her. "Grandma? Where's everyone else? Why are we alone?"
"Consider this a type of purgatory. An in-between for the dead and the not quite. It's different for everyone."
"But then, why are you here?"
She smiled down at him, and she led him to a bench. Slowly the whiteness around them began to change into a park. "This is the park my parents took me to when I was a kid, while we had breaks between tours!"
"I'm stubborn, much like Bruce. Thomas, he moved on quickly... Your parents waited around, just long enough to make sure you would be happy." She looked out at the park. "But I just couldn't move on... I care too much..." The park came into sharper focus. They could make out the trees, and butterflies flying around. "He's running out of time..." She whispered.
Suddenly Dick felt a hard pressure on his chest. "I think I'm waking up..."
Martha placed her hand above his heart. "Yes, you are. Do take care of Bruce for me... He doesn't get enough sleep.
Dick nodded, and all at once, it disappeared. He felt fire in his chest, and suddenly he was coughing up water. Once it was gone from his body, he gulped a bug, freezing breath in. The cold feeling that went away was back, and he began shivering.
He opened his eyes, relieved to see Bruce sitting directly above him. "Bruce..." He whispered, his voice was hoarse and he coughed again. He saw Batman physically relax, as he removed his cape and wrapped it around the freezing bird.
He fell asleep on the ride back to the batcave, determined to tell Bruce about the conversation he had with Martha. But by the time was awake in the cave, the blankets wrapped around him, he couldn't quite remember what he had to say that was so important.
Hey guys! This is just a little idea I've had for a while. Let me know if I should continue it with the other Robins!
