Shooting Stars...
It felt as if I was still breathing through that thick cloud.
The deep grey swirled in morbid twisting about my shaking body, ensnaring those around me. Tears spilling from my eyes that stung in the smoke, but they were also tears of agony as I stumbled blindly trying to get deeper into the Italian alley way. The heat of the fire beat against my face, pushing me backwards, away from the flames whose light could barley penetrate the thick atmosphere.
I coughed once... twice... my head was spinning as I was thrown into a place where up was no different from down. My voice failed as I opened my mouth to talk, but as soon as my lips parted, huge swells of ash gagged me as I hurried to spit them out, spluttering. Behind my choking, one word screamed to the shadows behind the pyre, Edward!
A pair of frozen hands grabbed my upper arms, the ghostly limbs reaching from the smoke behind me. I struggled against the pull, but my heels failing to anchor me as I was dragged backward: Away: Away from him. I screamed, I kicked, my hands flailed around in an attempt to free myself, but the body to not relent it's firm grasp.
The high sun streamed into my clouded eyes, blinding me. My cheeks were still red from the heat of the blaze, and my hair was white with ash. My eyes were bloodshot, whether from crying, or the smoke, I didn't know. The hands moved from my arms to grab my hand as I was tugged hurriedly across the flagstone square. I was stumbled, my toes catching in every crack of the stone floor.
"For goodness sake, Bella!" Alice was screaming at me, as she pushed frantically against the flow of the crowd who were dashing to the blaze.
"You've forgotten Edward! We can't leave him there with them!" I sobbed, though part of me knew the truth. I wanted Alice to pretend it was alright, to lie to me; another part wanted her to confirm my biggest fear.
"He's dead, Bella! There is no going back for him!" Her own voice broke, she shed no tears as we broke free from the crowd dashing down shadowed alleyways faster and faster, hoping that they would not catch us here.
Se shoved my roughly into the yellow sports car and flared up the engine is a mighty roar before spinning it in the small courtyard and balling through the gates.
