Sixth Sense

By RealityBreakGirl

He had to beat it down, and that wasn't easy. It was also dangerous. A ninja needed to be on his guard constantly. A mutant, even more. From the time they were all small Splinter had worked to develop their sixth sense. It alerted them to the presence of humans, to threats, to when anything or anyone strange was encroaching on their territory.

But it was different here.

Here they could all walk freely about, mix with people. Humans, aliens—maybe even other mutants, he didn't know—they could all walk with them, among them. And while on one level it was liberating on another it was torture.

He had to constantly fight not to tense when someone now entered his "space" to not count everyone as a threat. He had to fight what his sense, what his muscles were screaming at him to do and jump, leap, move away from all these people.

Threats! His instincts screamed at him Threats! Enemies! They see you! Hide! They're going to get you! Capture you! Your brothers! Your father! Move! Get out of here before they see you! Before they change your mind! Leave now! Hurry!

It took a great deal of will to even look partially relaxed.

The first few times he had walked among the people, even with his family with him, it had been a challenge. Only his Sensei's presence had kept him from running to the nearest shadows. Although, upon later discussion with his brothers, one had pointed out some small thing he had noticed that indicated their father was nervous too.

It had gotten easier the more they went out among the people—but that in itself scared him a little. Not that he'd ever admit it.

He began to wonder if this was going to cut back on his ability to sense danger. And that thought made his blood run cold. He needed his sixth sense to be the best he could! He relied on it! He needed it to stay safe.

He needed it.

And what would happen if it left?
