A Birthday Preasent

Murphy didn't know what to do, her birthday was today and he had no money. Now of course she had told him he didn't need to go through the trouble of finding something for her. She had said to him that she was satisfied with just his company. Still he felt a nagging in the back of his mind that made him feel he had to. She had always treated him with such kindness and generousity and Murphy didn't know any other way in paying some of that back. Honestly, inside, he felt that he wasn't worthy of her time or breathing space.

He also knew that a petty gift could not and would not be able to hold up to her wonderful kindness.

Murphy paced his apartment, thinking, thinking on what he should do. She was coming over in three hours and pacing wasn't raising money any time soon. He would glance at the clock every so often and that only made him more nervous, restless and full of anxiety. "Just relax and take a deep breath Murph," He muttered to himself with a deep chested sigh, "Think..."

His green eyes suddenly flashed open. Remembering something long lost in his top dresser drawer. Something he had long forgotten until now. Until this very moment. Murphy dashed to his dresser and opened the top drawer, rummaging madly, like a druggy whos medicine had gone missing. "There!" He piped excitedly and pulle dout a small black box. He flipped it open and loveingly looked down at the ring. It was a patite silver princess ring and a small aqua stone was embedded in it, the ring stared back at him quietly.

000ooo000

A smile broke out on Murphy's lips when he heard a knock at the door. He got up from the couch and tried his best to casually walk over to the door. He opened it up and was unexpectedly wrapped up in a hug. "Hello Murph!"

"Hey, Fern," He answered and slowly pulled away from her, he asked softly, "We've known each other for about... what? Six years? And still counting?"

Fern stared at him intently, curiousity filling her countnence, "Yes... we have?"

Murphy dropped to one knee and searched in his back pocket of his faded blue jeans. Her eyes grew wide with excitement and her breath cut short, "Murphy..." She gasped.

He pulled out a black box and opened it. "Fern... will you marry me?"
