1. (Drouble)
I am weary, master. I can barely keep myself upright. And yet I keep staggering on because you stagger on. I keep going so you will keep going. And you trust Samwise, your ready fellow, don't you? You think nothing can make my spirits sink, and I try and make light of everything. But I see you toiling every day, and you won't let me help you. I could take that thing for you. I could carry it just for a while. There might be things I do not understand, but some of them might be plain useless, and stupid into the bargain.
I wouldn't be here if you'd had your way. But then you'd be dead by now, and I'd be useless and heartbroken somewhere in the wild.
I wish it was all over. I wish I were back with you at Bag End, and we could sit in our garden, smoking our pipes, and telling the tales of our journey to all who would hear them. And I could be close to you again, and you not lost in the dark anymore.
I wish we'll live to see the day. And that's what keeps me on my feet.
2.
I know you did the right thing. I know it was the only thing to do. If there's one living creature on this earth I'd grant a love such as ours from the bottom of my heart, it is your Lady.
Still I could hardly maintain the smile on my face yesterday. The beauty of Minas Tirith, all the folk assembled there, the happy forebodings of a glorious future. It was all there yesterday, everybody could feel it: This age of the world will be a happy one. And it will be yours.
I won't be a part of it.
3.
When you took the cup from me, my hand brushed against yours for just a second, and I held onto that cup just a bit longer than necessary. Just one touch, leaving me desperate for more. But you are "committed elsewhere", and I don't want to imagine the details of the story your pendant tells.
I have seen it in your eyes, and I am no match for an elf. But are you? You are a warrior, a fighter. Does that become these frail creatures?
You brought hope to my people. And yet you bring such despaire to my heart.
