A harmonised body to give and take life
two sides of a mind
one heart
Silence was all that could be heard at the Orphanage. On the outside it was unassuming, however, on the inside fear gripped the children and staff alike. It wasn't an outspoken, or a realistic fear. It was one of uncertainty. Fear of the unknown. Fear of a girl named Evelyn Greyarc. A girl who feared herself just as much as everyone else.
The small girl sat in the corner of her falsely bright room, a stark contrast to her own pale form. Her inky black hair cascaded over folded body. Angry red marks covered her arms and legs, as though she had been picking at her skin. Which is exactly what it was. Her breaths were erratic and sharp, she trembled slightly from cold. Due to the fear stigma around her, the Orphanage barely fed her, didn't clothe her like they should.
Outside the Orphanage, a man in long robes approached the door. His white beard and hair stood out in contrast to his dark blue robes. Half moon glasses sat upon a crooked nose and bright blue eyes shone from behind them. A small smile rested on his old lips. The strange old man knocked on the large wooden doors and patiently waited. Within a few seconds the door opened, revealing a tired looking Matron. Her faded red hair pulled back into a bun, white streaks shot out from her temples. Her brown eyes had heavy bags beneath them. Her expression was stern and vicious as she looked to the older man.
"Can I help you?" she asked in a snappish voice. The man smiled politely.
"Yes, I am Professor Albus Dumbledore and I have come to inquire about a position in my school for one of the children here."
"Oh? Which one?" She asked, resting her hand on her plump hip.
"A miss Evelyn Greyarc," Albus replied kindly.
"Oh, must be a crazy school. To be honest, we'll be happy to be rid of her. Follow me, I'll take you to her, but keep a distance...she bites." Albus frowned, but otherwise followed the nasty woman.
They walked through the silent halls, every step of the way, Albus was feeling less optimistic and more appalled at the state of the Orphanage. They eventually reached a room at the back of the building, one that had a rusted deadbolt on the outside. The Matron unlocked the door and carefully pushed in open, making the hall echo with the screeching of it's hinges.
"At your own leisure," she sneered and turned away, not wanting to be anywhere near the crazy girl. Albus lightly stepped into the room, looking around for the girl in questions. There was a small cot that looked like it had holes in it, stuffing coming out al over the place, a scratchy looking blanket was all that dressed it. A small set of drawers and a wardrobe without a door. Glass shattered on the ground where a mirror used to be. His eyes finally fell on a form in the corner. The tiny girl was curled in on herself, seemingly hiding in her hair. He couldn't see from where he was, but she was doing something strange with her hands and arms.
The old professor approached the girl.
"Hello, Evelyn," he spoke as calmly as he could. The girl stopped her strange movements and looked up slowly. Her eyes, one a silvery blue, and the other honey brown looked at him in surprise. Her pale face was sunken and dirty.
"My name is Professor Albus Dumbledore, I run a school for people like you," he told her. Evelyn cocked her head.
"For freaks?" she asked. Not with malice, or bitterness, just fact.
"No, for Witches and Wizards." She frowned at the old man. "I would very much like it if you would come to this school. You will be taken care of there," he added, taking pity on her skinny body. She gave a small smile.
"I am a witch?"
"That's right."
"Will I be burnt?" Albus blinked in surprise.
"No. At this school you will learn how to use magic. You'll be around people just like you." Evelyn smiled, looking down at the ground.
"I think I would like to go..." she told him quietly.
"First things first, you need to leave this place. I will take you to somewhere you can stay for the next seven years when you're not at school." He held out his hand to the girl. She stared at it in confusion, before going with her instincts and delicately placing her hand into his.
The two left the Orphanage after the appropriate paperwork was filled out, officially making Dumbledore her carer, although this will be passed to the person she was going to stay with. When they were in a side alley, Albus asked Evelyn to take his hand. As soon as she grasped it, she felt a pull inside her stomach, as though there was a hook there. In a flurry of confusing states, they landed in the Leaky Cauldron. Evelyn felt bile rise in her throat, but due to her lack of food, she had nothing to throw up.
"What just happened?" She asked in a weak voice.
"That was something called apparation. Something you won't learn until your later years at Hogwarts."
"Hogwarts?"
"That's the name of the school," Albus told her with a smile. She smiled back and nodded. The pair moved to the back of the pub and Evelyn got the eery feeling people were staring at her. Albus tapped a sequence on the bricks with his wand and the bricks began shifting. Evelyn's mismatched eyes became wide with awe.
"Wow!" She exclaimed in a breathy whisper. Dumbledore chuckled at her childish innocence, despite what she had been through.
"Welcome to Diagon Alley."
"This is amazing!" She did a little jump up and down, looking quickly from witch to wizard to building. They made their way through the streets.
"Where are we going, Professor?" She asked, noticing the way people looked inquiringly at the old man.
"We're going to meet up with your new guardian."
"Guardian," she giggled to herself. Albus smiled to himself.
The two approached another pub, though this one seemed slightly more jovial than the leaky Cauldron. The inside was filled with laughter and smelt strongly of chocolate syrup. Evelyn stayed close to Dumbledore despite the pleasant meeting ground. Her anxiety of people not daring to be forgotten by the newly happy girl. Evelyn could see they were walking up to a man with light brown eyes and sandy brown hair. He had scars over him, but he seemed friendly.
"Remus, It's good to see you!" Albus greeted warmly. Remus stood and smiled at the older Wizard.
"Hello, Albus. Is this the little one you were telling me about?" he asked looking to Evelyn, who shyly hid around Dumbledore.
"Yes, it is. Her living condition was far worse than we could have imagined. She will need the utmost care."
"I understand," Remus agreed, before looking to Evelyn, "Hello, I'm Remus Lupin. It's nice to meet you!"
"I'm Evelyn, It's nice to meet you?" she said quietly, but smiled at the man.
"I'll be looking after you when you're not at Hogwarts," he told her with a smile.
"Okay." Albus smiled at the two, feeling rather accomplished.
"Well, I will leave you two now, I have things to be done before school commences, I'll see you when the term starts, Evelyn," Albus declared with a jovial smile. Evelyn smiled at the old wizard before he turned and left. Remus turned to the girl.
"Come, I'll take you home."
When they arrived at his London home, Evelyn was thrilled. It was warm and cozy. There was an abundance of books everywhere. She made sure she looked at everything there was to look at. Remus smiled at the girl as she bounded around the house, exclaiming when she found something she liked. She came rushing back into the room with a huge grin that lit up her face more than the sun.
"There are so many books!" she threw her arms wide to exaggerate. Remus grinned at her. He truly had no idea if he could raise anyone, he had never tried. And with his...monthly inconveniences, would she truly be safe with him? What was Albus planning for this young girl? After running around, it was clear to Remus she had very little strength, already fatigued from the day. He took the option to study her health whilst she was catching her breath, pretending to read the titles of some books. He noticed that through her thin grey shirt and faded baggy jeans, when she moved certain ways he could see her bones stretch through the material. All up her arms were pinch marks. This was what concerned him most. Self Harm. What if she ever got hold of a blade? The thought made his stomach curl.
"Come on, Evelyn, let's get you cleaned up and put to bed." She turned around, her eyes shining. It was strange how one eye looked so cold, whilst the other was so warm. He took her to the bathroom, gave her clothes and a towel and left her to herself.
Evelyn looked around the bathroom, it was more extravagant than any she had come across, it had a bath! The tiles were white with a golden leaf design. To most this bathroom would seem ordinary, but to her, it was beautiful. She turned on the bath and left it to fill.
She felt strange, everything had happened so fast. Yet, the men she met were trustworthy to her. Anyone was more trustworthy than those at the Orphanage. She felt saddened as she remembered the place. It was horrible. Despite the fact that it was all she ever knew, she knew it was wrong. And then, out of no where, this strange man came and offered her freedom and a warm guardian. It was more than anyone like her could wish for. Not only that but the opportunity to actually go to a school! Odd things have happened around her that she finally had understanding of. To be able to control whatever these powers were appealed to her strongly.
The skinny girl slowly lowered herself into the tub, feeling the heat consume her body was a relief beyond measure. She sighed into the water and soaked for a while before scrubbing her skin back to it's pure white state. She made sure she was clean, finally. When she got out of the tub and looked at herself in the mirror, she barely recognised herself. Nothing could have made her happier.
As Remus tucked his new ward into bed she looked up at him with big eyes.
"Remus? When will I go to Hogwarts?" she asked sleepily. He smiled down at her.
"When you turn eleven."
"That's AGES away!" She exclaimed. Remus chuckled.
"It's only three years, Evelyn." She frowned.
"I don't want to wait that long..."
"In the mean time, I'm going to teach you some things about the Wizard World. And we'll be able to get to know each other." Her angelic face beamed up at her new carer.
"Okay, Dad."
