I couldn't stop messing with my hair, pulling stands out from beneath the hat I was wearing, then tucking them back in. Taking the hat off entirely and putting my hair in a ponytail behind my head. It would be cold out though. I took the ponytail out, and replaced the hat. I quickly checked my watch. It was the one that He had gotten me for Christmas. It had a thin gold band and a pretty crystal face. And its hands were currently pointing to nine o'clock. If I didn't hurry, I was going to be late. I looked once more in the mirror, dabbing at my lipstick a little with a tissue, and rushing out my dormitory door.
I met Him in the Entrance Hall. Filch was checking names off a huge list. He eyed us suspiciously as we walked by him, but then checked our names and moved on. The first silence that pressed against us as we walked from the castle to Hogsmeade Village was long and awkward.
Finally, He said, "You look beautiful, Lily."
"Thank you." In an impulsive motion that was almost too quick, He reached for my hand, squeezing my cold fingers gently. I squeezed back comfortingly, biting my lip slightly as I looked up at Him. He looked back and smiled. I smiled too and suddenly we were laughing. He brought me closer in his arms, and the silence that followed was no longer awkward. It was understanding, and warm. Bringing us together, and enveloping us. There was no need for any words other than the ones that he and I next exchanged.
"I love you Lily."
"I love you too James."
