Valentine's Day Plans
"That is your idea of a Valentine's Day Gift?" Amanda asked incredulously. She was staring at the newspaper Lee handed her trying to figure out what else to say.
"Yeah, you know, I thought it was perfect for the boys," Lee explained. He tapped the circled advertisement as he added, "and it's a special just for this weekend."
"This weekend? Valentine's Day Weekend," Amanda groaned as she rolled her eyes. "Of course, it would be for this weekend. Who else would want to do something like this on a weekend meant to be spent with the one you love?"
Lee put his hands on her arms and tipped his head to study her face. "You don't… you don't seem happy about this. I thought you'd love the fact that I thought of something to do with the boys. Something they'll both enjoy."
Amanda sighed heavily as she tossed the paper onto her desk. She sat back in her chair and took a deep breath before stating, "Sweetheart, you don't have to try this hard. The boys already love you. I love you. You don't need to plan an entire weekend with them."
Lee smiled, his dimples deep as he replied. "I know you do and I know things with the boys have been moving in the right direction, but when I saw this, I just knew how much they would enjoy it. The weather's going to be warmer than usual so when we're running around outside, they won't be too cold."
Amanda folded her arms across her chest and leveled her eyes at him. "Well, what if I was planning something just for the two of us? You know, something to celebrate our 'you-know-what'."
"A-man-da," Lee whined, "We'll be gone for a few hours, not all weekend. And I know the boys would love this. After all, isn't Valentine's Day supposed to be about love?"
Amanda rolled her eyes again as she said, "Yes, Valentine's Day is supposed to be about spending time with the ones you love."
"Exactly why I thought the boys would love this!" Lee threw his hands up, hoping she would understand.
"And Jamie and Philip do love you, but I think you're missing my point," Amanda leaned forward, her head in her hands, her elbows on her desk.
"Amanda, what is there not to love about paintball? Leatherneck had the new recruits out at Station One try it against a bunch of us. I mean, yeah, it hurts when the ball hits you initially but you get over the pain real fast when the adrenaline sets in," Lee said excitedly.
Amanda shook her head one last time before conceding, "All right, all right, if you want to take the boys out for paintball on Valentine's Day, be my guest, but don't expect me to be kissing any booboos you get from it."
Lee leaned down and lifted her chin with his fingers. He was smiling, his dimples deep, his eyes sparkling as he teased, "Even if those booboos were in a certain place, say, between my belt and my…" He purposefully trailed off when Amanda raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"Lee, I can't believe you would even talk like that here!" she hissed, glancing at the unlocked door to the Q Bureau.
Lee laughed loudly before replying. "Amanda, I promise I will not get hurt and you and I will be having a wonderful dinner. Alone. And after that...a little dessert maybe…"
"Maybe," Amanda replied softly, as she captured his hand with hers, "some dessert but I wouldn't call it little."
Lee chuckled, leaned in close until he was only inches away from her face and whispered loudly, "Really then, what would you call it?"
Amanda reached up and traced the outline of his lips with her thumb before kissing him gently. "You're not going to find out if you get hurt playing paintball with the boys."
