A/N: Just a little pet verse Halloween story. Bswindle20-this is for you! :)
"Okay, buddy," Danny Williams sat his son Charlie at the dining room table and placed his bucket of candy in front of him. "You stay here, and I'll get the movie set up."
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?" Charlie asked hopefully.
"Absolutely, buddy. I'll just be a minute, okay?"
"Okay," Charlie said agreeably. "Can I have some candy?"
"Not yet," Danny said. "I have to check it first. Tell you what—you sort it into piles of what you want to eat first, then I'll clear those first."
"Okay."
Danny left Charlie at the table sorting his candy and went to set up the movie. He could hear Charlie counting as he worked. "This is for me, this is for you."
"Setting some aside for me?" Danny called. He was flattered. He figured he'd get the rejects, but it was nice to know Charlie was thinking of him specifically.
"No, Daddy," Charlie replied. "These are for Bullet."
"What?!" Danny raced into the dining room just in time to see Charlie hand a package of Whoppers to Danny's German shepherd. The dog crunched into them happily, wrapper and all. Danny cringed. Hopefully, that would pass. Danny wasn't looking forward to cleaning it up, though.
Danny reached into Bullet's mouth, trying to get the candy before the dog swallowed it. Bullet just growled and clamped down.
Danny yanked his hand out. "Ouch! That hurt!"
"That's what you get for trying to take his candy away from him," Charlie said. "He doesn't like that." The boy held out another piece of candy to the dog. "Here. This will make up for the one Daddy tried to take."
Danny snatched the candy before Bullet could. "No!"
Dog and boy looked at him with twin puppy dog eyes. "Why not, Daddy?"
"Because chocolate is bad for dogs. Very bad," Danny said. "It could kill him."
Charlie's eyes filled with tears. "I don't want to hurt Bullet, Daddy."
Danny picked up the five-year-old and tried to soothe him. "I know, buddy. How much did you give him, anyway?"
Charlie buried his head in his father's shoulder and held up four fingers.
"Four? All Whoppers?"
Danny felt Charlie nod against him. "I don't like Whoppers. I thought Bullet would."
"You can't just feed Bullet people food, Charlie," Danny said gently. "It's not good for him."
Charlie looked at Danny, tears streaking his little face. "Will Bullet be okay, Daddy?"
Danny's heart broke. "Yeah, I think so. He didn't eat very many, and Whoppers don't have very much chocolate. Just don't give him any more."
"I won't, Daddy," Charlie said solemnly.
"Good." Danny smiled at his son. "Now, what's say we watch Charlie Brown now?"
Charlie gave one last sniffle. "Okay."
"Okay, then." He turned to carry Charlie into the dining room, but paused and looked at the dog. Bullet was eyeing the candy hungrily. "Oh, no, no, no. You've had quite enough. Come on, you're watching Charlie Brown, too."
Bullet gave a last, longing look at the candy before following Danny. Danny sighed in relief. Just what he needed—a dog and a child hyped on sugar. Well, Happy Halloween, he figured.

A/N: As Danny points out, chocolate can be fatal to dogs. However, as he also points out, Halloween candy is mostly milk chocolate and mostly filled, so it's considerably less dangerous. Still, I strongly, strongly, strongly advise against letting your dog have Halloween or any other kind of chocolate candy.
