The Dog and His Master

Puppies did not exist in the Twilight Realm.

The Twili knew nothing about puppy love. Midna certainly didn't. She pushed and pulled Link around like a tool, expecting him to do as she told him, and not to act of his own accord. The imp probably didn't think him smart enough for it.

But over the course of the journey, Link's feelings towards the imp changed.

Upon first meeting arrogant, egotistical and annoying, Midna didn't exactly attempt to portray herself as anything else. Midna hid the information Link so desperately wanted to keep him in her service, and allowed him no more reason to stick with her. After all, the Twili thought Link the Twilight's version of vermin. Midna didn't think of him as human, despite her people's legends, due to his race having exiled hers. Link didn't exactly think it fair, but for some reason her dislike of her judgement made him ever the more willing to prove himself a good dog, and over time, obedience simply became loyalty, and loyalty became puppy love.

Suddenly, Link found himself unable to process without orders to follow. Goddesses, the thought of losing her or the adventuring life killed him from the inside out. The imp took him over, controlled him like some cruel puppet on a string. Without even knowing it, Midna successfully took over his mind, his heart, until he became little more than a real dog. Always mute, Link didn't exactly change in any visible way until Zant's attempted murder of his only master.

The curse originally meant for Midna caused him agony, but not as much as the agony that pierced his heart upon sight of the weak form splayed across his back.

Her skin white, her voice trembling, Midna uttered what he thought his last order. "Go…to Princess Zelda…"

Link by then thought her fate sealed. He stood there stoic as his master uttered an order from the grave. "Go…to Faron Woods…get…the Master Sword…find…the Mirror of Twilight…Kill Zant…"

For doing this to his master, Link knew the death of the Usurper certain already.

And then Zelda performed the miracle that left his heart soaring. He didn't want to embarrass himself, so he kept quiet as Midna told him his next destination.

And then, after killing Zant, he almost lost her again.

His terror at his master's determined face as the Fused Shadows revolved around her destroyed all his logical thinking as he desperately reached out to pull her into the warp void with him.

And as Ganondorf raised the helmet and crushed it, only one thought registered within his head.

Kill him, Kill him, Kill him...

And he did. And his master's beauty as she revealed herself-alive, and more beautiful than ever, even without her new appearance-officially became the most beautiful moment of his life.

And then she destroyed him.

His only thoughts of hopeless betrayal, he stood there with the Princess, numb. For a while, he thought it a prank, thought her coming out from behind a tree somewhere very plausible. But the false hope did not last long. As he pulled the Master Sword from its sheath, as the Princess looked around for the danger, he silently apologized to Midna for his ignorance, and plunged it into his heart.

XD I love tragedies.
