Lucy abruptly sat up, gasping for air. She was sweating bullets.
She looked around her room before plopping back down in bed. It's been weeks since that day she watched herself die, and she wasn't able to sleep a wink. She's never felt so human before.
She sighed and once more tried to fall asleep.
Tried.
Lucy heard the window creak open.
"See? I told you she was still here!"
"Shhh! You're being too loud!"
"Says you!"
As if she didn't have anymore problems, but she just laid on the bed, not notifying Natsu and Happy that she was awake. They've been doing this for a while now, ever since they saw Future Lucy die, and she couldn't blame them. Watching someone close to you die right before you can make you feel insecure.
"Lucy."
Natsu's voice made her look at him.
"How'd you know I was awake?" she smiled lightly at him.
"I don't know, I just did," he plainly answered.
Happy crawled on the bed to her side and curled into a ball. Lucy just smiled at the blue Exceed. It wasn't long for the blue cat to fall asleep.
Natsu sat on her floor, his salmon head resting on the edge of her head. Lucy couldn't resist the urge to run her hand through it. What surprised her though was that he grabbed her hand and held it to the side of his face.
"Natsu..."
"I'll protect you...I'll protect you no matter what."
"Natsu. Look at me."
"Don't leave again..."
Lucy sat up slowly so she wouldn't disturb Happy and took her hand away from Natsu's face.
"Natsu," she said more sternly. "Look at me."
He slowly turned his head. Her heart squeezed when she saw his face. His eyes looked lost and scared. He had dark rings around them as well. Where did her fierce, hot-headed dragon go?
Natsu wrapped his arms around her waist and buried his face into her hip. "I won't let you die again. I promise to protect you."
Lucy felt her eyes well up with tears.
"If you died, I don't know what I'll do. What would become of the guild? What would become of me?"
"N-Natsu..."
He let go of her. "Sorry. I'll leave Happy with you. He's always panicking about something happening to you.." He seemed to hesitate to continue but he went on, "I have been too."
He began to climb out the window but Lucy stopped him. "Natsu... S-stay with me..."
He looked at her for a moment before complying. She scooted over to make room for him; Happy sleeping next to the wall, Lucy in the middle, and Natsu at the edge.
For once, after so long, Lucy was able to sleep without having to see herself die again. She figured she could get used to sleeping with Natsu if the nightmares won't go away.
