This here little drabble/oneshot is for a greatly ignored, but not unimportant, character: Rui. It's pretty pointless, but I would like it if you reviewed with your opinions, good and bad. Also, Yuu Yuu Hakusho does not belong to me.

Rui watched as the bundle containing Hina's child fell, to land hundreds of thousands of meters below. Her eyes closed, her hands clutched to her chest, she came to a realisation. She should have realised it earlier, but it was not until now that it mattered:

The Koorime were cold.

Living on the floating glacier for time beyond memory, they had frozen. Their skin was cold to the touch, to cold to belong to any living creature. It was said that their hearts no longer pump blood, and, as a result, their veins filled with ice water. Their eyes, the only bit of colour on them, were red, as red blood.

Their hearts, like all else in their forsaken homeland, were frozen.

They had condemned an innocent child to death, tossing him from the floating glacier to the world below. Even if the child survived the fall, any number of demons would devour a defenceless infant.

Two tears fell. Rui caught them before they could hit the ground and hid the hiruseki in the folds of her kimono.

She heard the footsteps of the other Koorime retreating from the cliff's edge. As Rui turned to follow them, she cast one more look over her shoulder to where she had thrown Hina's boy.

Please, she prayed. Return to us, to slay us. To melt us, and free us from our chains of ice…
