There was no doubt in anyone's mind that John Druitt adored his granddaughter. She was all he had left from a time when he had been truly happy. And Elly made every day in this world a new and exciting adventure. Somehow, what should have been a never ending nightmare was, with little Elly, almost as good as what he lost.
Of course there were bad days. Elly was still a little girl. And little girls liked to get their way often. So she would occasionally throw tantrums or fits when John said no to her. Little girls often had a way of getting themselves into trouble without meaning it. Many a time Elly had disappeared to chase a butterfly or run after a rabbit leaving John to panic and wonder where she had gotten too.
And then, there were these times. They were going for a walk to stretch their legs. Or more to stretch John's legs really. Elly was being carried as usual. John really did spoil her some days. "Grandpa," she called.
"Yes, Elly?"
"Can we go into that store?"
"Which one?"
"That video store there."
John looked the place over. There was no one in sight and the store had large glass windows that would allow him to see any danger trying to creep up on them. "I suppose so," he agreed. He teleported them both inside and let Elly down so she could look around. Privately he hoped she found something to hold her interest. Joseph was getting awfully repetitive.
Elly ran straight to the children's section to look through what was still left. Her grandfather didn't like her looking around the other movies too much because they weren't for young girls. He promised as she got older he would let her look through them more. Right now she was satisfied to just look through the titles of the children's section while listening to her grandfather's measured footsteps as he strolled through the rest of the store.
John was looking over some older black and white films when he felt a tug on his pants leg. "Yes, Elly?"
"I found something, grandpa."
"What did you find?"
Elly handed him a DVD case. "Something new."
John studied the case. The movie was called Labyrinth and it seemed to be a fairy tale of some sort. It was rated PG which gave John slight pause but he reasoned he would be there to make sure Elly didn't see anything too scandalous. "Is this the one you wanted?" he asked.
"Yes, please."
"Then I suppose we can take it home with us," he agreed.
"Are you getting a movie, grandpa?"
"I am."
"Which one?" John showed her the cover of the DVD he had picked up, Casablanca. "That's a funny name."
"But a good movie."
Elly shrugged and the two teleported themselves back to their apartment for the time being.
That was how John found himself three hours later re watching Labyrinth yet again. Elly particularly liked the ballroom scene and made John rewind it several times. Still he couldn't be too upset. After all, it was nearly Elly's bedtime. And then he could watch his own movie.
