Cake

Both Haruhi Suzumiya and Mikuru Asashina like birthday cake, but they don't like the idea of birthdays. The celebration of the anniversary of one's birth is made a big deal around the family and friends, especially in school. People bring gifts and send cards, both sentimental to a higher extent, and hold quiet to extravagant parties for the lucky boy or girl. Hell, advertising made prom look like movie premieres, so a birthday would be considered a wedding. You can't pull focus away from the lovely couple, so you can't pull any attention away from the birthday kid.
Cake was practically the only thing they liked about the celebration. The dessert tasted sweet and fluffy, compared to what toll the coming of age process has on a teenager. One minute you're 15, and the next thing you know, you're 20. Life wouldn't be sweet by then, so we all have to live our lives for the best. Savor the moment, if you will.
Haruhi and Mikuru have little in common when it comes to birthdays, and they know well that birthdays come and go, along with the very meaning of a simple celebration due to the media. At least they both like cake; you can savor that forever.
