From Possibility to Actuality

" I hereby declare the defendant, Sister Iris of Hazakurain - "

" - NOT GUILTY. "

.

The judge's gavel met with wood, signalling the spectators of this particular(ly long and difficult) trial to cheer for the defence's success; in behalf of the verdict they all knew - or hoped - was correctly given. Confetti rained from above, showering the courtroom with colourful pieces of paper - and magazine cut-outs if anyone tried to scrutinize individual pieces - though none really found the odd gesture surprisingly peculiar.

After all, it always happened in cases that Phoenix Wright handled. And won.

Of course, Maya knew that one Detective Dick Gumshoe had a hand - or a basket, if she wanted to be more specific - in making the celebratory confetti. In every case Nick took actually, barring one. Her eyes wandered around the courtroom, locating the large man in his iconic green coat... just above the prosecutor's bench. He seemed intent on throwing out more of his handiwork, which only earned him a large, cheerful smile from Maya, as she waved at the detective while he tried, for the third time since they had both caught each other's gaze, to empty his basket at the remaining mass of people. He grinned back, animatedly returning her wave with his own in response -

- before he pointed to the defence's side of the court with a hand now devoid of paper; specifically, at the blue-suited attorney who, from Maya's last, stolen glance a few minutes prior, hadn't moved so much an inch since both Iris and Prosecutor Godot were escorted out of the courtroom.

What could only be described as a worried expression crossed Gumshoe's features, though it lasted for no longer than a few seconds.

The medium sped to her spiky-haired friend, mouthing a silent thanks towards the detective's direction for pointing out the attorney's... distracted appearance. Or at least, that's what Maya thought, in light of the way the trial came to its end.

Though Maya ignored the prickling uncertainty that began to build underneath her skin as she made her way to him - because clearly, Nick would have finished organizing his papers... no wait, he'd still be at it and she'd have to unceremoniously stuff his things in his briefcase and drag him off -

- she didn't fail to notice that something was wrong.

a/n: I was dumb earlier because I accidentally deleted this. Oops. But anyway! First AA fanfiction and this is just a pretty short, pretty boring prologue that tells you absolutely nothing about the story.
